Earlier today I was working on some "in the hoop" projects that called for spray adhesive. I followed instructions and my needle kept gumming up and thread breaking. What did I do wrong

I use 505 also. No gumming, no smell!!!!! I bought it online at AllStitch.com. Some JoAnn fabrics (ETC) carry it.

I too use 505 spray great use all the time for quilting never gums up needles. Also use glue sticks from dollar store for applique and have no problems. Great questions and answers flowers for everyone. Lisa

Have you tried wash away sticky? Pretty much adhesive stabilizer without the spraying. The spray can be messy and inconsistent. May worth a try.

If the material allows, you could try basting stitches around the inside of your hoop instead of adhesive spray. I use this method for any fabrics I have difficulty hooping.

If you email me: melide_menschen@yahoo.com.au, with your hoop's maximum stitch area measurements in inches, and your format, I will create basting stitch files for you to upload and stitch out before you stitch your design. Please always make your horizontal measurement the first measurement, e.g. 5x7; 6x10; etc.

I use glue sticks when I do in-the-hoop projects. So far that has worked well for me. I did manage to buy a can of spray adhesive but haven't had much luck with it. I have never seen any of the brands the US ladies use here, so I think I will stay with using the glue sticks. No bother with overspray which is an added bonus :)

What a good idea. I would not have thought of that one on my own. Thank you so much

Sounds like you are probably overspraying. I use 505 use sparingly and no problems with thread or gumming.

I prefer pinning & basting to using the sticky, u can use alsohol, gum away or a little wd40 on cotton to clean your needle but b sure needle is clean of all of it so it doesnt get on your fabric. *

I wipe my needle with alcohol on a cotton ball every once in a while when using spray. gets the " gummy" off the needle which helps keep the thread from fraying. Polyester thread also doesn't seem to fray as bad as rayon. PJH

505 is good stuff....and if your hoop gets gummy just clean it off with alcohol and cotton...comes right off.
Have you tried pinning your work to the stabilizer in the hoop? I've been doing that lately instead of spraying the 505.

I buy mine on www.ShoppersRule.com I think there was a price increase a couple of months ago. also, I have used whatever brand that Joann's sell and use your 40% off coupon. I spray very lightly. also, I use the titanium needles. I love them!!!

I use nothing but 505 spray and it keeps the needle from gumming and is safe for the machine.
