mema: I have the brother pe 300-s machine. I bought the PES-Basic 1 from Walmart to use to get the designs off the computer. Wish now I would have gone a little higher, but didn't think I could figure it out. I did and have brrn having fun ever since. Get a lot of good advice from Cuties. Thank-you all. Have fun.
I did get some thread at walmart and I started on my grandsons shirts. I've been loving it. Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome to "Cute"* Don't start out buying a bunch of designs. You will find many sites in the bookmarks section where you can get free designs, and free software to convert them to the format you need. Just be carefull about viruses, there's a post here about "mohamed" who likes to put viruses in his downloads. You will soon learn which ones are best to keep visiting, then you can buy from the ones you like.
Cute have given me alot of great desings I'm trying to budget to get the 6 month membership. I think I've found a home. Thanks
Welcome! I'm so glad you decided to stop in. I understand wanting to save money, but remember the old saying....you get what you pay for. You have some good advice here for saving on threads and stabilizers....just don't go using saran wrap and such or you will wind up messing up your machine. Use a GOOD needle and change it frequently. Start out collecting all the things you already have to sew up. Marji suggested dish towels...good idea. Practice on old towels, t-shirts, hubby's underwear...just kidding there! A note of caution...just because a design is free, doesn't mean that it is bad or good. Test out your design on a similar fabric that you will be using in your finished project. Then, after you are satisfied that it is sewing out well, put it on the final. Brother-usa.com has several free embroidery designs that are good as well as Cute Embroidery, Amazingembroiderydesigns.com and many many others. Now you have a starting place. Go look in the projects area here for other ideas. ;)
Thank you for the advice. I love sewing, crocheting, knitting anything to to with yarn, thread or fabric. The doctor says keep the hands moving. I had a slight stroke 6 months ago so my left side is weak but I'm still perking. Thanks for the advice and welcome.
hello, you can get good thread from www.abcembroidery.com and from www.spectrum.com and www.smartneedle.com also they have good backing.i have got thread from all of them and it is a lot cheeper then a store.i live on a income also so i look around a lot.also you can go to www.bunnycupembroidery.com they give away retired sets.they have several retired sets on there now.just look for the place it says retired sets and download PEZ. they are good sets and fun to do.so just have fun and do it.just embroidery and enjoy.at first i would embroidery on everything.it was fun and still is.like to watch the designs being made.smile. so have fun.
You are right bunnycup had some very cute free designs especially for the kids. I love doing things for my babies. Thanks for the welcome.
Very good advice from all, I would get a basic thread set with several colors and skip the huge spools for the time being. I found a basic thread set on ebay for a reasonable price. A word of warning, this is addictive. Enjoy!!!
You are right I'm hooked. I can't go back now. So many designs to little time. Thanks for the welcome.
W E L C O M E to CUTE:) You've gotten the best answers that can be given...treat your new baby good and he/she will reward you with great projects!!!
My machine is my new love lol. Besides my kids and grands it really does rank right up there. Thanks for the welcome.
Hi, Mema, and welcome to Cute! First, I do know what it's like being on a fixed income. Embroidery thread is rather expensive, so you could do a couple of things. First, look for Metroem.com, they seem to have good thread that is fairly inexpensive. BFC-Creations.com has Admelody thread that is also fairly inexpensive, both poly and rayon. Poly will generally be cheaper and hold up better than rayon (not always). Regular sewing thread will not do, because it won't give you the shine, and it's not really the right thickness, and it'll lint up your machine. If you want to really start cheaply, get a couple of free "redwork" designs you like, and one spool of thread that matches something like your kitchen or bathroom. Take a look here on Cute in the Redwork section, you'll find some neat desigs. Redwork is embroidery that uses only one color of thread (doesn't have to be red). I'm sure you have some linen/hopsack type dish towels in your kitchen drawer that could use embroidery, and they're free. You could wind a bobbin with the same thread you're using for the top, and have the redwork nice on both sides, and you won't even need bobbin thread yet. I don't know where you live, but Wal-Mart sells inexpensive tear-away stabilizer, which would be fine for dish towels. Just remember, if it's a design with lots of small spaces, you'll have to tear that stabilizer out of those spaces, that can be a royal pain. Start small, but you can start cheaply if you work at it a bit. Best of luck to you, and I hope you enjoy your machine!! Marji
Thanks for the welcome and the advice, My crafts and my kids are what I look forward to. When I'm not with my kids I love to sew, knit, crochet, anything to do with material or yarn. The doctors tell me to stay busy so your advice is steering me in the right direction I really appreciate it hope to stay in touch. Thanks again.
You got some good advice here. There are some websites I've seen where you can get thread, bobbin thread and stabalizers cheaper than at the dealers or local stores. I saw bobbin thread for $7.00 a spool and I pay 14. I know some of the other cuties will know where to go.
congradulations!!!!! I'd be happy to share some of my PES designs with you
Thanks for the welcome and the offer I may take you up on it. I have had a ball with this machine. Finding new designs is fun to I love to read any kind of craft books, advice, anything . Thanks for the welcome and the offer.
Welcome memasanders! You have received great advice so start stitching and if you have further questions, ask away. There is plenty of help for you here on this great site.
THanks for the welcome it was beautiful. First time I've gotten flowers in a long time.LOL thanks and I will be asking advice.
welcome on board, dailylaundry gave you good advise, so I just say: get started and try on all kinds of fabrics you like to have an embroidery on. You will be addicted soon!and if you download: you need Pes-format for the Brother machine
Hi, Fabric is a weakness for me. I have been making little baby quilts for ebay so remnants are a weakness. And yes I am already addicted.
Hello, welcome. You came to the right place for help!!! There are a few things that you will have to have to embroider....embroidery thread (for bobbin too), stablizer and of course something to embroider on...like linens, clothing,(lol). You will find a lot of free designs on this site (and info on where to find many many other designs). Hope this helps!!!! Again, welcome!!!!! A flower to you!!
Thanks for the hello. I have been sewing anything that doesn't get out of my way. I love it. My daughter(who got me the machine has me doign her shirts for work and clothes for the boys. and my granddaughter is getting all sorts of things my son said she isn't staying with me. He's afraid she'll come home embroiderded Ha ha.... Thanks again for the welcome
you don't really want to scrimp on thread or backings if you want good stitchouts but for designs there are free ones everywhere just type free embroidery designs in your computer and start hunting. I warn you though once you get started you will be addicted.
You are right I tried cotton thread when I first got the machine beacause that's all i had it wasn't pretty. But I have gotten stabalizer and good thread since. That's where all my spending pennies go. I'm lovin it. It takes my mind off my problems. Thanks for the welcome.
