Good question! I am going to ASSUME, that since my Janome Digitizer Pro has a function that will digitize TrueType fonts, that they are in the public domain. I hardly think Wilcom, the writers of the software, would put into the software something illegal. Also, I have seen on many, many sites, digitised alphas of TrueType fonts, way to many and way too obvious to think they are illegal. This is still an ASSUMPTION, people, I am not a lawyer. But I still don't think the embroidery police are going to rip your kid's jacket off his back because you have a TrueType font on it. Good Question, Adelmarie!! Hugs, Marji

this is a really good question I have been wondering the same thing. I can take true type and creat my own embroidery I have seen the same sold on sites that I can make myself, does that mean its copyright infringement for me to make it. the font I use is a free font for windows programs I have not seen any copyrights on the fonts so who actually owns it?

There is a really good article on Artistic Thread Works about copyrights. I always thought that as long as you did not make any money off the items you put them on that you could use anything. But according to them, thats not true. The link below will take you to the article on it.

There are public domain, free for personal use and shareware fonts. Some websites give the name of author, and its website, so you can contact the author about the usage of them. This is a good post, Adelmarie. Hugs&*

Obviously it depends on the designer for which uses he/ she gives permission.
On reputable sites you will be informed about restrictions.
