I do a lot of FSL and it depends on what the design is. If it is a white design I use regular white bobbin thread in the bobbin. Usually you want FSL to look the same on both sides so it is a good idea to use the same thread top and bottom.

I use the same thread in the bobbin, good luck****
I just do one FSL : I've use the same color and same # thread *
I also use the same in the top and bobbin. I have gone to some sites, and they recommend at least one should be the cotton thread, with one thread the 40 wt polyester. I have not tried that. This is supposed to give the doily a more had crocheted feel. I have also done doilies using a 30 wt, but that is because I had it and it was a varigated that I wanted to try.
A little bit more imformative this time! I have looked on the Embroidery Library Site and there is an article on the projects page that says use the same thread from the same spool top and bottom. I've posted the link here - it's well worth a read. This site have lots of good articles well worth a visit.
I haven't done any free standing lace - yet. But when I do I was going to use the thread in the bobbin wound, from the same spool, that way both side should have a good appearance, especially if the finished product is to be hung up and allowed to swing. Hope this helps
Thanks for asking this ? I have never done FSL but it is on my to do list (gets longer all the time, have to stay off the projects page) & now I know!
I use the same thread in the top and the bobbin - when doing FSL, always - *4U
