There are a couple types of sticky stabilizer. There is "wet n stick" or "peel n stick". They are both available in several brand names. You could also try cutaway stabilizer with a glue stick. I do not use sticky stabilizers. I buy fabric gluesticks in bulk and use that when I need sticky. They are available at most fabric and craft stores.
i tried it once using a leather needle and the design totally perforated when i was done. :-(
Just to revisit this again I have a question, what is sticky stabiliser?
I have everything else, the leather, a Design, the machine is turned and ready, a project in mind, all your wonderful instructions. But sticky stabilser..., cheers Ruth
I did. On recycled leather (old jacket from a thrift shop), made small cases for mobile phones. Used sticky stabilizer in the hoop. I embroidered a fairly dense design, with a normal needle, worked out okay. The special leather needles make a triangular, fairly large hole, right for very thick leather; a normal needle gives a good result on suede and leather used for clothing and so on.
There's a tutorial on this site http://www.emblibrary.com/EL/elpr...;CS_Catalog=Elprojects
Welcome to Cute. I embroidered on leather, I used a special needle for leather and I did not hoop the leather, I used spray adhesive.
So you hoop your normal firm paper adhesive in your hoop and then you spray the spray adhesive onto the paper and then you place your leather onto it.
This worked well - I have added link of the lipstick holders which I posted onto projects awhile back. I also did leather bags.

Thanks for your help! I've been hesitant to embroider on leather, since I didn't want to mess it up. Your description and help was perfect! Thanks.

I just finished a bag for a friend in deer hide. A very soft maleable leather. From the readings, simple designs are suggested. If you use the leather needle your hole is permanent and this is where problems can arise with more complex designs. I did make a mistake but was fortunate it was only straight stitching and I had not used a leather needle and most of the holes vanished. Not going to happen on stiffer heavier leather. Test your design first. I will upload the picture later. Good luck.
careful, careful, careful, being a biker leather is a staple in my life, but you really cannot embroider directly on leather if it has to many stitches, what will happen is when you are done the design will just fall out and you'll be left with a patch in one hand and a hole in your leather jacket or vest in the other, so be very very careful......
bringing this back to the top,for the cuties that missed it.flowers
I used a sticky stabilizer and did not hoop the leather. I used a titanium needle but that is what I always use for embroidery so no special needle.

I too, have embroidered on leather with lots of success - I have used a speical needle - but most of the time - it isn't necessary - you just have to know - once that needle goes in the leather - there will always be a hole there. Some do say that you should limit the thread count - but I didn't find a need to worry about it.
Thanks, Shirlene they look great, did you have any problems hooping the leather, did you use stabiliser or tearaway,
Ruth
I used a leather needle. Very pleased. The design is from Embroidery Library, not special for leather.
Thankyou so much, I just bought a piece of leather from a trash and treasure market which I envisage a nice embroidered bag from so I will give it a try, cheers, Ruth
