for fear I will end up at a point where I am lost and I need to pay for something I didn't mean to order. I thought it would be nice and helpful to have a cheat sheet of sorts with a few of the basic words that would help all of use enjoy all of the sites and the artist beautiful work. A few words that I thought would be helpful are Download, Free, Design, Return, Edit, cart etc. I don't know if anyone would be willing to submit some words that would help or not. Does anyone else think this would be helpful and if so what words do you think would be helpful? Thanks for listening. Paula

This is a great question, and lots of great answers, thanks so much for asking!! I have McAfee virus protection, which tells me if it's a 'green' site when I enter the url, so I don't worry about viruses, etc on foreign sites. I've noticed a lot of sites, while in foreign languages, seem to have a button marked "free designs" or "freebies", that's getting to be a word that trancends the language barrier. Really, it's pretty hard to be charged for something accidentally, you usually have to put it in a cart and checkout, there's some process to go thru to do it, and you need a form of payment like PayPal or a credit card number. Always be cautious on the internet, of course, but I think it would be pretty hard to be charged for designs without you knowing it. I love it that our 'world' members have put a little dictionary of terms here, now we get to learn embroidery words in other languages!! Great question, and a good help to others, Thanks!!!!! Hugs, Marji

In Dutch

Patroon = design
gratis = free
hoofpagina = homepage
betalen = pay
borduurpatronen = embroidery designs

Hope this helps and don't forget to use your right m ousebutton on an empty space in the site. Go to pageinfo and click on translate this page in Enhlish. Most pages it works.

It is better to watch out.
Just by clicking an "agree" button you might become a paying member or subscriber of something useless. I know of many parents whose teenagers clicked around for fun and they had much trouble to get out of this.

So useful german terms for a freebie hunt may be
for free: kostenlos(e), gratis, frei(e), Geschenk
for design: Stickmuster, Maschinenstickmuster, Stickdatei(en)
for download: herunterladen, runterladen
But we germans like english idioms a lot, they let us feel smart, modern and global. So many sites use the english terms too.
German grammar is complicated- better set an asterisk behind your search words, for the ending of words changes with context.

you can not be charged for anything if you don't put a credit card number in...
they will not usually send ANYTHING out with out having payment first.

I rarely go to these sites unless someone post a direct link to a freebie. I am also afraid.

On most sites you can right click on an open space on the page, scroll down to page info, then click on translate this page into English. I have found this works almost all the time. I have found only a few sites where it was not available. Good luck and happy downloading!!

Go to google and click on language tools. Then translate the words on the buttons in question. It will take some figuring out, to determine which language to translate from, but it has worked for me.
