I use Anton Robinson thread I find it the best and you can get it in 1000m spools. It is also great for free standing embroidery as well. It is not that expensive and it seems to last a long time. I think you can also get some of the colours in 5000m spools.
I live in Australia and it comes from America.
I have tried a couple of other brands but found it kept breaking a lot
Good Luck hope this helps

They have regular thread and embroidery thread in that brand.

I use it all the time and have never had a problem. Sometimes it's the only thread I can get.

Do you mean Gutermann sewing thread or their embroidery thread. I've used their dull embroidery thread - it came in a packet with some designs and gives a glorious heirloom effect. Otherwise I use the shiny rayon by Madeira and other brands.

Yes, you can use Gütermann.I did,but the spools are little and very expensif. Also not a big number of colours. So now I buy 1000 mtr spools from Marathon. It is polyester thread and works beautiful. But only possible to buy in the Netherlands and Belgium.
You maybe look at the site designsbysick.com. I think they have thread, that is almost familiar. Also in price.
Maybe also Madeira, those colours are also very nice. But not very cheap.
Sorry for my bad english. Gerdien.

That is the only embroidery thread I use. It does have a sheen if you get embroidery thread it doesn't come off the spool and get messed up like sulky does,I haven't used any other brand.

I got masses of thread, some very old, from an aunt of mine and have used that on my machine. I wanted a muted soft finish to the embroidery. I set my machine at the slowest pace and 'babysat' it for a while just to make sure. The result was just what I wanted. So I would use 'other' threads for embroidery - not surger thread though as it is not smooth and my over lint the machine. I have a dual embroidery / sewing machine to felt the sewing thread was OK. Hope this helps.

Actually, you can probably use any thread for embroidery, but there are reasons you might not want to. As Raels said, the Gutermann is not 'shiny', and your design will be rather dull, won't pop out. Embroidery thread is specially designed to be strong, not break at the high speeds of embroidery machines, not have excess lint to clog up your machine, all kinds of other stuff. OK, now I gave the official dealer spiel. Truly, the embroidery thread is much shinier, prettier colors. Personally, I think it depends on what you're doing. If you're putting a design on something, you want it to show up, and to last, and embroidery thread is good at that. If you're making FSL, I think that's another story. PERSONALLY, I use good serger thread for FSL and just make sure to clean the lint off the machine routinely, including the tension discs, with my little sweeper. BUT, I have a Janome 300E, and that machine is a little workhorse, and isn't a bit fussy about thread, tension, anything. I have more trouble with embroidery thread shredding & breaking doing FSL than with the regular thread, so I quit using it. With the serger thread, I put the design in, and can sneak away & do other stuff, and the thing just works! I have to constantly babysit embroidery thread. Again, but: I don't have all kinds of bells & whistles on this machine to get messed up! No bobbin sensor, thread cutter, whatever, it's just a plain bare-bones embroidery-only machine. I don't know if I'd recommend my method to anyone who doesn't have a Janome (Raels does, I know). Best of luck to you, Marji
