Hi tinfriend! I have made a couple of these quilts, for pets and babies, and it is a blast and really quick and easy to make.
Sandwich the layers of fabric together (tight, with safety pins), the size you want it to be. Join the layers: backing on bottom, as many layers of batting as you want- the most the better- and top. Take a big needle with strong thread and joing the layers with a tight knot leaving about an inch of the thread tails. Do this like every 6 inches from side to side both ways. You will see how it forms the squares and gives a beautiful look to the quilt.
Sew the double binding (about 3 1/2 inches) around the quilt Please let me know if this is clear enough or need more details or have any questions. I could post a picture too, if you want. Good luck!!
Good luck in you project. Remember to take a picture for us to see!
I'd go with Bikermomfl as you have not got much time.you could add plain fabric to the back and just do a few baby design embroidery and may be the childs name (or I put on my GD's baby bedding "Nakita's baby blanket")
why not get a really cute piece of fabric with fairies or disney on it, add a pretty backing a little batting, then just stipple quilt it, add a binding and poof you're done.....
If you would like, you may send me a pm with what the exact set up you would want. If you want four blocks across & five down, etc. Tonight, I will use some software to set up a schematic for you to use with the block sizes, etc. Sashing, number of blocks, block style will all make a difference.
The easiest way is to DRAW the pattern you want. It's a small quilt, so draw it life-size. Divide the paper into squares, divide some into triangles if you wish, but I'd keep it simple if I were you. Make it 40 x 25, use 5 cm squares, have fun colouring the squares. Draw one 5x5 square and add seam allowances on all sides, 1/4 inch or 6mm - try it out stitching on a piece of paper - line it out by the side of your sewing feet and measure the distance between the outside of the paper and the stitching line. Use that as a guide to cut all your squares - 5 cm + twice the seam width. Add a 1 cm border to the completed top (cut a strip 1 + 0.6 + 0.6 = 2.2 cm wide. I know that would make it slightly oversized, but when you quilt the thing it will shrink a little. Hope this makes sense.
Oh Mops - this sounds like the way to do it! Thanks so much for your explanation! Appreciate it so much!

*4U!
Perhaps I did not make myself clear! LOL I need someone to TELL ME what SIZE the squares need be for THIS size of the cot /crib that I bought as it is not a normal size!
I don't have an idea as to how to convert patterns - So would appreciate assistance from someone to tell me the EXACT size the SQAURES or BLOCKS need to be including the seam allowance so that when I am FINISHED the Little Quilt will be 41cm x 26cm!
So you see I don't have a CLUE where to start and therefore no use for me to go to ANY website for a pattern! :-(
Thanks in any case for trying to help me! I appreciate it! *4 you both Mary & Daisy!

lol i sorry i dont quilt either i am searching my files to see if i can help in anyway
You can do square size 5 cm (bigger will not be so fine). A nine patch is well for a square figure (20x20 or 40x40)... I think :o)
Sissi - this is driving me nuts - so appreciate any help - thanks a million!
