Is the gift from you or your son? If it's from you I would do what you like. If it's from your son then let him decide. So many baby items have lace regardless of the sex but being male I guess he can't see past lace as being girly. You might consider using a less frilly kind of lace.
Do what I do - have items suitable for girls & boys & then let the giver [in this case your son] choose what he wishes to give, that way he can see the finished results.
If you do redwork designs use varigated thread. It really looks nice. They have many colors that use a nice blend of baby type colors.
Perhaps find some trimming that has these colours in them suitable for a baby but that is not 'lacey'! I have seen some and they have an Alphabet on them in pastel colours - so cute - others I've seen have little ducks, puppies etc! Really cute!
Hope you find something that you can use but I too would stick to pastel colours. You can even make a white set and use CHECKS (gingham) as the borders in different colours - I did this for my GD and it really looked stunning! It was white blocks (embroidered with designs) and then different coloured checks in between!
All the best!

I say "add the lace" and if it is a boy and you think it is to girlish, keep it for a little girl. Just create another set (you'll have plenty of experience). I like lace too.
Do them in pale green and soft yellow colours and if you add lace make it with very narrow lace. It will be good for a boy or a girl. New baby things often have tiny lace on them.
