I always use WSS stabiliser, top and bottom as it will wash out and leave just the design. A nice little trick, if you have the patience, is to use the same threads in your bobbin so that the design is coloured on both sides.
Make sure you choose designs that are denser stitching or have sufficient underlay with wider letters and no single stitching (eg, redwork type)
If you check out the links below, (click on each picture to enlarge it and have a close look) you will see how one design, with Satin stitch is not as good (on towelling) as the other design with fill stitches.
I hope this helps as it has been a pleasure to answer a question for a change.

THANK YOU, neat the way you "show" what is good and what is not. Big diffrence.
I did towels for the weekend challenge - I learned so much (I have a new machine so there is a learning curve). I found out - the deeper the nap - add a second layer of water soluable stabilizer on top. My new machine had a very nice simple font....I wanted it to be masculine - but still "fancy"? I was able to increase the size of the monogram right on the machine...I did the washcloth first and about "freaked out" worrying that I wouldn't be able to enlarge the mongram for the towels...LOL... hope some of this helps you!!!*
This site is just wonderful for your question.
You better get going! It's just initials. Look at "projects". There are so super towels there. And for your reading enjoyment, here's a link from Cuties last week.
