I am out of my slump and ready to get going, but the idea I had is going to be a little tricky for me.....I want to do a baby quilt...

the design will have puppies and kitties on it. starting with a puppy I want to connect the designs with some sort of trail...(kindof like a road map) I want it to look like string/cord, but I am not sure if attaching it would be a good idea for a toddler in case they tear at it....the next design would be a kitty at the end of the string...so on and so forth....What would you recommend I use...I thought the 3d affect would be great, but I fear little hands tearing it away and getting caught in it....I also thought maybe a trail of puppy feet might work and the next would be cat tracks...I really like the idea of the cords between
each design, just not sure how to sew this on and be secure...I hope someone will be able to give me advice or perhaps an idea to connect the designs

That quick bias comes in many colors and metallics as well. The cord mentioned I always heard called "rattail cord" - sort of a very skinny tube of stain with some sort of a filler in it. Kind of like the very thinnest of "spaghetti strap."
Your quilt sounds wonderful, can't wait to see pictures. I admire how creative you are and envy the recipient of this quilt.

Sounds like a great idea. Paws are nice, but so's the cord idea. I have a cording or couching foot for my machine which attaches a narrow cord - can be anything, knitting cotton, fine fancy cord - with a regular sewing machine zig zag. Setting the width and stitch length of the zigzag decides whether you can see the cord or have it completely covered. No way baby fingers would remove that. I hope you'll show the final result!

Boy, when you come out of a slump you really come out! What a cute idea. I would use ribbon and maybe sew the paw prints on top to keep it more secure. Babies and toddlers really seem to like the feel of satin ribbon. You might also try iron on hem tape or fabric glue and then sew on top. I hope you post a picture when you're done.

Wow Camy! When you come out of a slump, you REALLY come out. This sounds like a great idea, and the replys all sound good. Toddlers do like to pull at anything loose, so I'd just make sure the string/yarn is stitched down. Have a good weekend, and remember to have fun!

I like Barb's idea. I even have some from Clover called quick bias and it is 1/4" wide. I would be afraid to use anything other than flat as string/cord could come out or loose and get around a neck. The bias tape comes in many colors, too.

I have never used bias tape before, course I don't sew that well yet...working in that area...I guess trial and error are called for...Sure wish we all were a little closer physically....

That's going to be cute! I dont' know if this would work, but I'll throw it out. Do you have a couching foot for your machine, and could you use the stuff that looks like satin 'string' (it has a name, I just forgot) and couch it down well? That might be a lot of trouble, but so will be anything else I can think of. I was also thinking of hand embroidering a 'string' in perhaps lazy daisy stitch? Cute idea, love to see it when it's done. Hugs, Marji

I like the idea of the bias tape put down with zig zag or decorative stitch because it will curve easily or u might use a narrow ribbon n the same way. Track trail would really b time consuming & take a extroidinary amt. of time. Let us know what u decide. *

They make a "quick bias tape" in the quilting world that is usually used for "stained glass" quilts..it is REALLY narrow in width and could be zig zagged down!!!That way you wouldn't have to worry bout it being pulled off!! This sounds like a really CUTE Idea....If you have a local quilt shop check there...otherwise try a site like Keepsakequilting.com for supplies!! GOOD LUCK:-)

Do you have decorative stitches on your sewing machine. You could do your embroidery then do a wondering design with a decorative stitch and contrasting thread. This would eliminate any small pieces.

Deanne, this is way beyond anything that I might even consider or think of - but it sounds interesting - I know when I made a cat shirt, jacket and skort for my GD - I did use cat paws to take the eye from one design to the other - along with crystals (you wouldn't be needing those) - would a flat piece of material work - that might be very narrow and appliqued on - work - instead of the cording? And why couldn't you use paws of each the cat and the dog - around it, as well.

Yes, that bias tape would work for that.

camylow by camylow 22 May 2009

I thought the dog tracks chasing to the cat and maybe cat tracks chasing to a mouse would be adorable...I still might do that instead...Would you happen to know where to geet a set of kitty tracks...

marjialexa by marjialexa 23 May 2009

I think Embroidery Library has 'tracks' of all kinds. Do you have software to help you with the placement?
