My daughter is a total tomboy...hope this baby is a girl and winds up being a preppy one...haha...anyway the flannel I chose for the back is a white backdrop with small dalmation puppies on it. There is blue, red, and yellow paw prints all over it....On the fron panel I need to choose a color...want to do white, but afraid too much white would be bad...Remember, don't know the sex of the baby yet...what would you choose?????? Lots of colorful designs going on it.....

I think alot of white, especially for a baby quilt, is not a good idea. Babys can't really see colors until a few months old, but they can see sharp contrasts quite well. So, this being said, fabrics that are black and white and have different designs on them (eg. checks, circles, strips, wavy lines, etc) are good. Black and white only can be a bit boring, so I would add some primary colors to that then. Kids look so good surrounded in Primary colors, I find - it reflects their vibrancy (is that a word? - LOL!) and youth. Keep in mind Red and Yellow are very "high energy colors" and blues and greens are more "calming colors", but all combined into one quilt would be FABULOUS. I'd love to see a finished photo of it all when you're done.

It depends on the number of appliqués you are planning to do, quite a lot of them and white or cream would be a good choice, or a light shade of almost any colour would make a good background. I hope all the advice you're given is not making things even more difficult!

My first thought was red or blue. Boy or not they would look good. But then you said it had to be a light color so I would see what a light blue or light yellow looked like with it.

I think lime green is pretty neutral. Even lemon would be great too....Good luck with your choice.

Pale green or yellow always pretty neutral. Also a peach may not be to bad. Happy stitching. LISA

I like lime green. The color works well for boys and girls. Even though it's a bright color, it is really soothing & happy.

I did an adorable baby quilt once, and used the flannel from wal-mart that was a white background with pink, yellow, blue and green pale stars all over it. I could embroider on top of these designs and they showed up beautifully.

I Always liked the bright Primary colors (and green, even though it really isn't a primary color). They are gender neutral, bright and cheery, and great for kids. Nevermind the fact that the same colors are on the backing fabric. I once made curtains for my son's room using those 4 colors. Each panel was a different color with the contrasting valence sewn into each panel, so that all 4 colors were at each window. eg...red panel, blue valence and green panel, yellow valence. Then I made the comforter blue on top and red on bottom. It was so easy to accessorize the room with decorations using the colors, too.

that sounds lovely...but I have to have one color palate to put the designs all over...no block theme or other materials sew in it except for applique designs

All children seem to love RED; yellow or orange is another choice & maybe a nice green; navy will make other colours stand out. So it should be something you like; lots of colours to choose from *:* Good Luck!

I need one solid fabric color choice to put my animals sewn on...has to be a lighter color to make the characters stand out.
