Camy I have for yrs. & usually wind up n hospital with uncontrollable N&V & have to have IV fluids & meds. Thank God ,I've not had one that bad n several yrs. I know a lot of it is stress related & some of it is allergies. I recognize it when I've 1 coming on now & quickly try to get rid of it before it gets that bad, a Darvocet or a strong Sinus HA med & some caffein(cup of coffee) will usually head it off if I remove myself to a quiet, calm, peaceful environment. I feel for u & u r already n my prayers. Lillian

Hey cammy, used to get all the time. Chiropractor helps loads see him evry 3 weeks and in between if needed. If have one use ice packs around head and dark room. Have imitrex migrane med sometimes works. Also know artificial sweetners cause them too. Dont do them any more. Dont like headaches. Please also get your blood pressure checked it could cause headaches as well just a thought. That would be the nurse coming out of me. Hope you feel better soon. Lisa

Never had one but both of my children get them. My sons trigger is artifcial sweeteners. and skipping a meal. Both of these things will cause a migrane with him. My daughter has 2 triggers tthat we have figured out. 1 is stress and the other is carbinated drinks. She cluster migraines and when she was pregnant they were really bad and the doctor put her on phinagrin. It is a med you use for nause but it works great for her. Hope you improve soon.

Not anymore but I used to. I was on prescription meds for about 15 yrs. And yes they sometimes lasted for weeks. They can be caused by anything. Mainly mine were stress related. But food and smells are big culprits too. If you can identify the cause it's easier to avoid them. I used to tell people my head was going to explode and then I'd be DEAD! "But that's ok cause it wouldn't hurt anymore." A cool, dark, silent room and icepacks gave me some relief.(hard to get with 3 boys). Heat always made mine worse.
See a Dr. These things can be dibilitating. And there is no reason for you to suffer with all the treatments available today.

The only things that work for me... room temperature coke in small sips sleep in a dark room warm compresses on the eyes. I have not taken any prescription drugs for this. Usually when I have a migraine I am so sick that I throw up.

Everybody had good suggestions for treatment, I used to use Emperin/Codiene (sp) perscription, dark, quiet, heating pad on my head, and sleep, had to sleep or it wouldn't work. But I found out I was getting mine from a food allergy, egg whites!! No egg whites, no migraines, whooppeeeee. And believe me, I can live without egg white, I never liked it! Good luck to you, get a prescription pain killer for times like these. Or a muscle relaxer might help, too, but you need to pay attention when it starts happening, girl, not two weeks later, sheesh, you know better! Hugs and more hugs, Marji

dark room - quiet - sleep - and everything that any one suggest - until it goes away. I don't suffer from them often - but have had a few - enough to know - I will do whatever it takes to eliminate it happening. Don't using caffine and sugar!

Oh my goodness don't get me started. I've suffered since about age 13. Hard to figure out my triggers. Stress is one. Breathing shallow during stress can do it or sometimes I wake up with a headache and find I wasn't breathing enough. I take several deep breaths and adjust my head an neck to open my airway better. I think they are related to my monthly cycle too.

I originally took Motrin for my headaches but over the years gradually doubling the normal dose (with doctors permission) wasn't getting rid of the headache anymore. so I got a prescription for Fioricet.

I recently stopped taking Fioricet. It was working great for several years for my recurring headaches but then I started getting headaches everyday for a whole year. I was diagnosed with rebound migraines. My body got used to the meds and as soon as they wore off I just got another headache. I took Topamax to try to prevent the headaches while I stopped the Fioricet. but apparently there is a reason that it's nicknamed "Dopamax". I got stupid, lost my memory, couldn't do simple math in my head, couldn't think ahead, got terribly depressed, and lost 15 pounds. I had to stop that but it did the job and I'm off the Fioricet. Now I take Maxalt when over the counter meds don't work. Over the counter meds I use are 8 hour Tylenol and Excedrin Tension Headache(It's tylenol with caffeine.) The caffeine opens the blood vessels in the brain and make the meds work faster. But be careful because caffeine addiction can cause headaches. If you drink coffee/Coke everyday and stop then you will probably get a wicked headache.
I would like to say that I found a way to handle my headaches without meds but I'm sorry I haven't.

Have a nosey at Gary Craig's site. www.emofree.com He has an odd technique but it works. There is a free pdf download that explains it. All you have to lose is feeling a bit silly! If stress is your problem it could help you. Admittedly I've never totally beaten a headache with it, although there are plenty of others who have. I use it in other ways a lot. I can often ease my daughters asthma without an inhaler using the technique.

Eliminate ALL processed sugar from your diet and you will reduce your migraines by more than half.

I've suffered from migraines since childhood, often ending up in hospital on a morphine drip. They have been such a bane on my life I often wished I was dead rather than face another one.

Then about 14 years ago my eldest son gave me a book called Victory Over Migraine, I read it and it changed my life. Now the only time I ever have a migraine is if I am very naughty and have a sugar fix or chocolate or come into contact with someone wearing a perfume that triggers one.

The main thing is to be really aware of your body and know what your 'triggers' are and avoid them at all cost. Also you need to be aware of the onset signals and take two asprin immediately and try and stay calm.

We have a painkiller here in Aus called "Fiorinal" Analgesic-Relaxant, the ingredients are 500g Paracetamol; 8mg Codeine Phosphate & 5mg Doxylamine Succinate, per tablet and 1 tablet is (normally) enough to ease a migraine sufficiently for me to go about my normal day.

If there is nothing like this available where you are, you could always ask your doctor for a prescription so a pharmacist could make you up a draft to try the next time you have a migraine you haven't nipped it in the bud early enough.

hugs n love, Meganne

THANKS...I have been told the reason I tense up is because if anything gets me going, I tend to hold my breathe, thus causing my body to tense and knot....So I started trying to cathch myself and teach myself to breathe better...unfortuantely I do stop breathing for a second or two if things aren't going my way....Go figure it took this massage therapist to tell me this. She figured it out within minutes...Now every time My kids are with me you hear this BREATHE MOM!!! More frequently or not..

I know why I get them....STRESS and my line of work...Nothing wrong as far as physical inside....It's my back starting to knot up and progresses into spasms and then into the neck and migrane starts. Hence the three week thing...not that I had the migrane the whole time...Last time I did have a headache for two straight weeks I went to a massage therapists within an hour she had it gone...Just can't afford to keep going so I need another remedy.

OK, I just spotted this additional post.....

Chiropractic manipulation on your neck will reduce the stress and relieve the tension, thus reducing their frequency.
They should also be able to give you exercises to allay the onset on migraines.

I used to have to lay flat on my back on the floor, with a bath towel, (folded into three lengthwise, then rolled up tightly into a pillow), placed under my neck, for ten minutes a day. I still do that when I feel my neck is going out of alignment. (I've had whiplash three times in car accidents)

If you can't afford medical treatment, try the above and also join a yoga class and learn how to relax and meditate.

You can try another treatment i learned at yoga, lie on your back across your bed with your head hanging down the side of the bed and relax, it sounds difficult but if you close your eyes and let your imagination run to something soothing, it will help.

And yes, having a reduced migraine, day after day, for weeks is not unusual. Doctors here call them Bast***d migraines and usually they can be relieved by taking "Migranol" or something similar, or just wait until they become a full blown migraine, after which the daily ones will usually stop.

The sugar free diet should eliminate all those migraines.
Hugs n love, Meganne

The last migrane I had I went to the doctor. I couldn't take the pain. Three weeks is a long time to hurt. You need to be checked out. Hope that you get to feeling better.

Dark room, QUIET (impossible with four young children in the house lol) painkillers and sleep it off. But I've never had one last 3 weeks! I think my worst was 3 days with varying degrees of pain level.

Usually a hot bath, dark room and a towel on the side of tub to place the head helps....I think I let the knots in my back go to far this time

Dear Deanna,

Sorry to read that you are getting migraines. I have never had one and can't imagine the pain. I agree with Carolyn - I would definitely see a doctor. One of the ladies I work with gets them occasionally and she says she just makes the room dark, no light as this aggravates her eyes. Takes a strong pain killer and just tries to sleep it off. But, if you've had this for this long I'd definitely see someone.

Love and blessings Chris
