Well you have some very good suggestions, it will all come together, good luck and can't wait 2 see your outfit on projects - *4u
eggyannie, you have an idea already what you want - you just need to find the design - you have some great suggestion below and I just bet you find just what you want - but following them - I would suggest a border - tht is light and airy - there was a great border used on a pair of jeans posted in the project just yesterday - take a look - maybe something will come to mind. I would use a multicolored thread or a redword design that has more than one color in it, too. *4U
Eggyannie,
There are so many possibilities and it is really a matter of taste. I'm not sure what 'mutton dressed as lamb' means exactly. I think you may mean that you don't want over kill? Anyway, at 61, I have been reading about fashion because I don't want to look like an old lady and I especially do not want to look like an old lady dressing like a teenager! One thing I found interesting to update your look it to not wear the matching suit look. We should mix it up. I was wondering what you would think of using a design that had some other colors in it that you could pull the color of your top from. (You could wear the top you cut out with another skirt or pants.) I picture a pale yellow shirt with your skirt and jacket, but I'm not great with putting colors together. I agree that you do not want a heavy design but maybe something with small filled areas for more color would work for you. Have you tried looking online for ideas? I know Nancy's Notions usually has designs for skirts and jackets pictured in her catalog and online. You should look to see if there are pictures and ideas on some of the embroidery magazine websites like Designs in Machine Embroidery. I know they have some of their issues in digital format and you can read it on line. There is a beautiful border print on Cute that is just leaves and flowers-like 921170 (it is in the 5th row down when you click on borders. I don't see the one I bought. It was green leaves and white flowers and about 3 inches wide. I'm sure you can find something or may already have something. The best way to see if you like it is to print a couple copies of it, cut them out, and lay them on the fabric or skirt. As I mentioned, the possibilities are endless. I hope I have helped. I'd love to see a picture of your finished project.
