would actually use it. But, lately, I have had ideas for several projects I wanted to do, and thought how much easier they would be on a serger. SO.... I have been doing some embroidery work for one of the girls at work's church...have made a little money, and have decided to invest in the serger. I also bought a book to hopefully help me along with understanding how to use it until I can take some classes. I can't wait to learn how to use it, and get started on some of my projects!!

It's a Brother 1034D. I really don't know if if is a "good" machine since I never even used one, but I know it has the features I'm most interested in. I need to make some nice curtains for my daughter's room, and some decorative pillows. I need to learn how to do the gathering so I can make a ruffle for both the curtains and pillows.

Thanks so much! I already had a crash course in rethreading the thing. It took me three tries to get it right, but I did it, and now I know how! Yea Me!

Congrats! I am actually on my 2nd serger now. I bought the Elna this time around. My first one I had bought used and she used it for gowns, etc. as did I. My kids all used it for 4-H sewing also. I wish I had had one when my kids were little....I made a lot of cotton dresses....don't miss those seams...LOL

I have a tendency to put off sewing projects because it is such a nuisance to finish all the seems. By the time I finish both edges of the seam, and sew the seam....it has taken me three times longer to make the darned garment. I like that the serger does it all at once!!

Colleen, enjoy it - I have my Mother's machine - don't know a thing about it - haven't taken it out of the moving box - but I will be taking classes and readying the manual on it - that is for sure. We can't wait to view the new projects that you have have planned, too.

I already did my first project! Very simple, but I have to start simple. LOL! I took an denim skirt that I shrank out of (boy is that a great feeling!), and converted it into a tote bag. Now I'm debating on whether or not to embroider on it. I like it a lot the way it is now, but I think embroidering on it will enhance it.

Congratulations, I'm sure once you use it you'll wonder what took you so long to buy it.

You can whip up great outfits with a serger without ever having to use your ordinary machine.
You know the kind of sweat shirts that have stretch banding for neckline, sleeves and hemline? So quick for kiddies play clothes.

Have fun and enjoy but most of all don't be scared of it, they're easy to use.
hugs n roses, Meganne

Can you do top stitching etc on a serger?? Doesn't it trim everything you stitch? I thought I'd need my regular machine for things like that.

You'll love it! I have a Babylock Imagine and can't "imagine" sewing without this great companion to my sewing machine.

Nancy Zeiman has some great videos on her site that will help you with serging. Click on the Techniques tab on the far right of the browser.

Thank you! It actually took me about two hours to get past the intimidation when I saw it all threaded up. It kind of scared me. But I have already re-threaded it once and it wasn't too horrible.

I'm actually thinking that I will be doing a lot more sewing now since the serger will be cutting the time in half or better. I used to hate spending all my time finishing the edges of my projects. Now I can do it all in one shot!

lv2sew by lv2sew 27 Jun 2009

yes you will! I use one for special finishes with wooly nylon (napkins and even some sheer curtain panels instead of hemming them.)

Well, I found one that Has the features I want at a decent price. Since I just made a little extra cash...I figure I'd invest in the serger. Nevermind the fact that I have a LOT os sewing I want to do for my daughter's room, and a serger would make some of the work easier, and save a lot of time.

What kind did you buy?

waterlily by waterlily 27 Jun 2009

It is a Brother 1034D. Don't know how good it is, but right now, I'll be happy with functionality until I really learn how to use it and know if I need more.
