in both her legs, so they put her in bed, and she can't get out to go to loo or anything. At about 4o'clock this moring the nightsister came and told her doctor's orders, she must get 80units of insulin for her diabetes. She said o well if the doctor ordered it, then he should know what he is doing. Imagine 80units. By seven o'clock when the doctor arrived her heart was beating like mad and then everybody starts running to save her life. We was so upset about it, and then the doctor said that he did not ever give an order like this and is going to complain about this. Tonight when we got to hospital she was much better, and now the new orders only she may inject herself for diabetics. What do you think about that. All that we can make out of this, is that the doctor says 18 units, and the sister thought that it is 80 units. Come to think of it. Love Marie.

This sounds like horror, I am very glad that your mother feels better and hope that things will be sorted out who made the mistake. Even not be a nurse knows that that amount of 80units isn't ok. You will be in my thoughts.

I am so sorry this happened, Marie! Perhaps you should take the advice of the RN's here, they would know best how to handle this problem. I hope your mother continues to improve. Hugs, Marji

Marie, this is terrible and inexcusable. I do think you should report this. Since we have some Rn's here, perhaps they can tell you the best way to go about this. You should get the nurse's name who gave her the 80 units before they hide her in another area of the hospital. Also ask for a copy of Dr.'s orders before they alter it, if they haven't already.

Someone needs to be disaplined for this. If you don't voice your concerns then nothing will change. Getting your daily meds at the hospital is always scary.

Are you sure she was a real nurse. I know this sounds odd but I have heard a few odd stories about nurses in your country that give their uniforms to family members or friends so that they can go to work in their place because they themselves cant go to work due to personal reasons eg: they are going out or feeling sick.

My D/H was diabetic and he NEVER was given insulin without them taking a reading FIRST...then they would adjust the insulin to the reading...her levels should have been checked B-4 the shot was administered!! Glad the Dr. found out, hopefully HE will correct the situation further!

Please consider what Lillian (lbow) said in her reply. That nightsister was either completely worn out, couldn't read, or plain has NO business giving meds! Don't the orders have to be written down by the doctor himself!?

That was a very close call. Hopefully the sister learned a valuable lesson. I do hope that she is being over supervised if she is allowed to administer meds.

Maria, after reading this - I have to say - it surely was not your Mother's time to go - but you do need to consider talking to the board of directors or a lawyer in reference to this - clearly someone did not follow orders. *4U

Oh no. Incredible. I am so glad your mom is alright. I am not a nurse and I know that 80 units of insulin isn't OK.

I am an RN & any green nurse knows you do not give 80 u. of insulin. this nurse is incompetent, the hosp is liable & I would SUE. iT SOUNDS LIKE THEY CAME CLOSE TO ENDING HER LIFE. Something needs to b done about this nurse, even if the Dr. was incompetent & ord. that much a good nurse would have not carried it out, she would have questioned her sprv. & the Dr. about this. Nurses on their toes save Drs. rear ends & keep them out of the courts by catching their mistakes. Oh this gets my dander up. I'm glad your mom is better *

Here Here, I believe I have saved a Drs butt once or twice myself. And I agree she must look into this so it does not happen again. So glad your Mom is ok.

I agree. I have also swept it under the rug before because we were afraid that pushing the issue would affect the way I was treated.

When moma or daddy went to the hospital we learned someone must question everything. There is to much at stake. To many mistakes being made. My prayers are with you all. God Bless Ronny
