with each wash. I thought it may be a way to use up scraps of knit or maybe even fleece.

Looks like a beautiful flower. time was when I tried everything but have never done anything like this. I bet it's tedius sewing all those strips down & I'm getting to the age where tedius is stressful. Would love to see more done though. I like the way it looks *

Oh cuties, I have gotten so many great ideas. We are living in the age of embellishment with the sky as the limit. The more unique the better!! As we all know with our embroidery embellishment that it is hot!!! I have never seen so much since the 1960's for you who are old enough to remember Lavern and Shirley!!! Thanks for all your input!!!

I'm trying to make a designer t-shirt from a walmart shirt!!!

Minnie's directions are great. The only thing I would add is that during the 'Stretch and Sew' days we were always told that the way to find the right side of the fabric was to stretch the edge on the crosswise grain and the fabric will roll to the right side. From the picture it looks like all the strips are placed upside down so that they roll toward the base fabric. I would think that if you turned them the opposite way the strip would eventually roll all the way into itself and you'd have 'tubes' of fabric stitched to the shirt.
Thanks for sharing this. It looks like a great project idea.

Interesting!! I guess that would limit the knit to solid colors because a print would be print side down.

taking a second look they are curling under, so you could use a print!!!

I have not done this with machine embroidery design. However, I have made designs using stips of knit fabric to make a design.
The key to it curling is cutting with the proper grain and placement of right/wrong side to get the effect you want.
Most knit fabrics - tshirt, fleece will roll to the wrong side when stretched on the crosswise grain.
So cut strips of 1/2 - 1 inch wide the full width of the fabric. (Like you would cut quilt strips.) PULL on the fabric strip to stretch it!! It's raw cut edges will roll.
Cut the fabric strip into desired size segments for design.
Place each piece on the garment and pin. Sew down the middle with regular straight stitch. Be careful NOT to catch rolled raw edge in stitching.
Hope you understand by directions.

Minnie, you are very right in your instructions. I did a closer look, and some pieces are up and some are down. Thank you. H&*.

This looks very pretty. Great idea! I have never seen anything like it, let alone a design made this way. But I think you could get the same effect using an 'normal' sewing machine. Are the pieces stitches with a single line through th middle, looks like it. I'd draw a design on paper ad try it out arranging paper pieces on it. As soon as you have a pleasing design I'd copy it in knit on an old t-shirt.

Kay, this is lovely - I have never seen anything like it - I do hope that someone comes along and has some instructions on how to do this - it would be so much fun to make some many different things for the grands. And a great way to cover up stains, too. I love it.

Yes, you could do an applique of a lion and add these knit pieces all around the head. That would cover a large stain!!!!!
