Yes, what a great question and so interesting to read what others do, I will have a go at anything. Learned to knit when I was 5, then "fancy work" hand embroidery, crochet, dressmaker, ceramics, porcelain doll making, teddy bears, ribbon roses, bead knitting, cross stitch, of course machine embroidery, paint the rooms in my home, lift up the carpet and lay floor tiles, made cards, paper tole, made handbags, hats, quilting, patchwork, pottery, donated baby clothes to the local hospital, just love to have a go at different things.

Hey! We need new floors! Can you help? LOL! WOW! You really HAVE done it all!! I was six whenI learned tocrochet, then knitting was a few years later. I can;t even imagine being able to handle the knitting needles as young as age 5.

I like to do one stroke painting, on most anything, best of all on the clear glass ornaments, jewelry making, embossing, glass etching. But most of all embroidery, baby clothes, bibs, burp cloths, bags. Most of these I make from scratch. Just don't have enough time to do all I want and work too.

I know what you mean,. Work sure does get in the way of my crafting! I like glass etching, too, but I cheat and use the etching cream. My brother-in-law does the honest to goodness glass etching, and it is truly amazing!

What a great question. I do the machine embroidery on just about everything. I also do hand embroidery, cross stitch, quilting, cake decorating, Panoramic Easter sugar eggs, volunteer once a week to make lap quilts for serious ill persons and I use to do some ceramics.

You have quite a list there. Do you have one room for all your crafts, or are they pretty much scattered. I used to TRY to keep it all confined to one room, but it always found it's way all over the house.

ejtads by ejtads 31 Jul 2009

All 4 of my machines are in the basement room but I get everything scattered about when I am sewing. Then I have to stop to make sense of it all. All my cake pans are store in a couple of spots because there is not enough kitchen space. The Easter eggs are done seasonally thank goodness. A friend of mine wanted me to do stamping and scrapbooking & I told them no because my hands are into too much now. Thanks for asking.

Besides embroidery, I used to cross stitch by hand and embroider but my eyes have gotten stupid. LOL. I do make down comforters and regular comforters and the pillows. I sew clothes occasionally, used to do a lot when the kids were little, but I have my Mom now that I have to take care of and my health isn't all the best either but I keep pluggin'

I also raise fish, koi, shubumkins and comets and fancytails.

Colleen, what a great question and I am glad to see that it popped back up - as it must have been lost earlier today. I have done a little bit of everything - not good at most crafts, but that never stopped me from trying. I love photography and genealogy and have lots of pictures and family history to prove that I can do that. I scanned all the family photo's and have a real great achive and will burn CD's for any of the family, that want them. I do not knit, crochet or sew, not for the want of learning, but because I have no talent. Oh I have done my fair share of sewing, but I would never say that is something that I enjoy or am good at. I have tried: painting, jewelry, sequins and so many others. My Mother owned a ceramic shop, while I was growing up and she also did floral arrangements for weddings, so I learned it all from a master. Funny now - it all seems so long ago and not worth the trouble to me now. My passion is embroidery and I just happened into that by chance. I wanted to make a baby blanket and didn't know how I was going to edge it and thought that I needed a sewing machine, as the one that I had didn't have a blanket stitch on it - so I went looking - as I was out - I watched a demonstration on an embroidery machine. My Mother owned a couple and had needed some help with them, so I thought that it might be interesting. Before I knew what hit me - I was signed up to purchase a machine in 30 days. WOW, where I came up with enough money to buy that - I don't know - but I squeezed every cent together and have been stitching now for almost six years. Of coarse, I still attempt some of these other things - from time to time - but I have a love of lace and I just can't stop making it. Hehehe! Now, aren't you glad you ask??? Hehehe!

Shirlene, I would NEVER have guessed your passion for Embroidery. LOL! I don't know where you find the time to do all of your projects. Nevermind the time to search for the perfect designs and post here.

I enjoy Photography, too. I like to take pictures mostly of nature. I have some incredible pics of strange bugs. Thank GOd for the ZOOM because I sure don't wanna get too up close and personal with some of the critters that I photograph! What kind of pics do you like to take?

shirlener88 by shirlener88 31 Jul 2009

I take pictures of nature, too. Hehehe! I have one of a spider - that was really unreal - my daugher would have never even looked at it - let alone taken a picture. The ones that I wanted most - of birds - never turned out - just can't seem to watch them in the digital right.

shirlener88 by shirlener88 31 Jul 2009

I have a bit more time - now that I have my Mother in a Skilled Nursing Center - but not near the time - that I would like to have free. *4U

Besides machine embroidery and digitizing, I do sew, and crochet and cross stitch. I am working on a great project with fun fur for Christmas presents. I have tried many different crafts including painting and beading and scrapbooking, but too many gets too expensive!

I do understand what you mean by the expense of all the crafts. I keep telling myself that I'll make some of it back and take it all to a craft sale. BUT...I never actually do it. It all piles up until I just end up giving it all away to make room for my next crafting endeavor.

I have always liked crafting in any form or shape, I collected stencils and have moved to making my own now I am painting my niece's room and stenciling circles, wording, flowers, butterflys and stripes on the walls. I am also teaching her at the same time, we have had a great time so far it will be completed tommorrow, then we get to start on the decorating LOL I have also made wooden figures for xmas collected berries to make jams and anything else I can get my hands on that is needed or wanted LOL
I use to hand embroider and cross stitch but now my eyes find it hard to see those tiny little blocks on cross stitch LOL tried to learn crochet and knitting but have never meet someone to teach me, have so much yarn collected but it just sits there unused, waiting for the day I finally meet someone to show me how to turn the corner LOL I wont give up though someday I will learn.

Currently I am making a loose cover for a friends chair. I am not enjoying doing it and the fabric has big stripes to be matched. All not helped by my closet Cutie friend who visited today and said how horrible the fabric was. When its finished back to the embroidery and some gardening and I want to get some jewellery made, whey hey roll on finishing the cover

waterlily by waterlily 30 Jul 2009

Yikes! Matching the fabric when sewing, is such a daunting task. Are you using a pattern that helps you with the matching, or all you doing it all by eye?

asterixsew by asterixsew 31 Jul 2009

There is no pattern so I suppose it is all by eye and guesswork

Hello Waterlily and Cuties,
thanks for this interesting question and your even more interesting answers. I love to be creative and had a lot of hobbies so far (silk-painting did a lot for color theory) and I still like to learn new techniques.
In the past I constructed some dollhouses for the kids in my life- and I came to machine embroidery "accidently" because I needed a special item for a dollhouse project. It was presumably the most expensive carpet in history of mankind.
This is a (not so very impressive) photo of a house I made (of course occupied).
Sometimes it is hard to decide which project would be most fun, and I'm afraid this is why I never finish one...
Greetings
Eva

Thanks so much for sharing with us all - Hugs Yvonne

waterlily by waterlily 30 Jul 2009

This is beautiful! That is a lot of work involved in this doll house. I have a problem with finishing large projects, too. I get tired of it and put it away to take a break :just for a few days" and never pick it back up again. That's one of the things I love about the embroidery machine. I can stick with lots of smaller projects and still be satisfied.

How do you make glass beads? That sounds very complicated! Do you have to have tons of different molds and drill bits for boreing the holes?

memasanders by memasanders 30 Jul 2009

I have glass rods that you put in front of a torch and melt the glass around as mandrel. Then you design the bead with the molten glass it is really fun. Of course you have to really concentrate on what you're doing but I have made some interesting ones.

waterlily by waterlily 31 Jul 2009

That sounds amazing! I't's really cool that your jewlery is truly one of a kind since you actually make your beads!

A jack of all trades, master of none. Hasn't that line been taken already? Crochet, hand embroidery, watercolors, sketching and drawing, general sewing, piddle with quilting, more ideas than time, more interests than I can accomplish if I live to be 200. I'm like you, waterlily, a very good copycat. I can see something and recreate. In fact, it always amazes me that people want patterns for some things when it seems so easy to me. But, I realize what I find difficult others find easy, too.

waterlily by waterlily 30 Jul 2009

So true! As easy as I find it to Re-Create things...I can't get teh hang of digitizing. But my 16 year old son...he watched one brief tutorial, and was digitizing designs right away, His problem is that if he isn't totally satisfied with the results, he gives up too easily. He has done some great work, but is so critical of himself (just like his mom), that he think he can't do it. Meanwhile, I'm amazed at the results and his ability to pick it up so quickly.

Believe me...I know all about the "more ideas, than time" thing!

I must admit that ceramics is not something I have tried yet. My Mother-in-Law used to do the porcelain dolls (is that the same thing?), but she bought the kiln and molds etc. Just a bit too much expense for me to take on. Your Dolls must be beautiful! I'd love to see some pics posted in the Projects section.

bevintex by bevintex 30 Jul 2009

I have made ceramic dolls, went so far as to buy the molds. Still have them, never know when I may need them. But my dolls were cows and pigs. Heads and hooves are ceramic, bodies are stuffed and of course they are dressed up . I love to add details to my projects. Ruffles, silk roese etc.

My passions kind of run in cycles too. I'll choose a craft and go crazy for a while, then move on to something else for a while. I must admit, that the embroidery passion has hung on longer than most. I still go back and do other things from time to time, but the embroidery maching still gets it's workout. Mending....not my favorite thing, either. I want to MAKE something, not just fix it.

I have always been a crafter. I can crochet, but cant knit. I like cross stitch, felt crafts, making fridge magnets from just about anything. (I collect them) I went thru a phase where I did ceramics for a long time but all the shops are gone now from town, nowhere to get anything fired. I Like just about any kinds of craft, beading, painting, handmade xmas ornaments. I dabble in needle tatting. If Im in a craft store and see something I havent tried and it interest me Ill give it a shot. I will get a digital camera this weekend and post some machine embroidery cats I made. I put a different spin on them. You will see what I mean. I have even dressed up renuzit air fresheners making them into animals with dresses. I just love to craft. Makes me happy.
I also recreate something if I like it, especially when someone has an outrageous price on their craft,I think I can do that and usually do.I am making angels out of paper butterflies, they looked like dresses so I added faces and am quite pleased with how they turned out. Guess thats enough about me. I will post some projects later in the week.
