Good luck, Lilian, whatever you decide! It does seem a lot of money for a discontinued machine, because of the possibility of no parts when you go to get it repaired. Pray about it? Hugs, Marji
I don't think I would spend that much on a machine that may be outdated. you can buy a Janome 300e on ebay for about $900 that has a 25 year warranty and has two different size hoops-4x4 and a larger hoop.I almost bought an older model quilting machine real cheap until I found I couldn't get any parts for it if it broke down.If I were you I would do some checking on it.
I had a Rose a few years back. I loved it. However, the price may be a bit high as I believe they are not producing them anymore. Also, I don't believe I paid much more than that new on a trade-up. You may want to do more research and contact a dealer.
Let us know what you decide my dear Lillian...I do know that BL/Brother users have a learning curve going to Vik/Hus machines, simply because the software isn't as intuitive as what we're used to. But if you can get a good deal on the machine, it's definitely worth learning! :-)
Lillian, I started my embroidery quest with a Rose. It's a good machine, BUT you DO need the Reader/Writer box in order to use anything downloaded form the Internet. You can still get some of the cards from Viking, but not cheap. It sews well, but again need to have a repairman willing to work on it in case. I THINK Viking is discontinuing some of their machines, so check to be sure the Rose isn't one of them or you won't be able to get parts in about 5 yrs.! Overall, I'd probably say no to spending $1000 for something that would be limited in using different files without another program, which isn't a cheap program.
I'd talk with my repair man to find out if repairs are still in the future before I bought it. I will keep this to the top for you.
I also have the roseI startede with that one, it is a good machine, but mainly does 4 x4. There is a bit larger hoop but have to split.
the price seems fair if you get all the card and writer as well, because you will need this to transfer from computer to card. Also look at your software. I have Husqvarne software and that is set to transfer to the Rose and the D1 what I bought later. You might be able to buy a Janome with bigger hoop for the same money. so consider that too.
That seems high to me. I think I paid about $1400 when I got mine 5 or 6 years ago. I like it very much - it replaced a Singer slant needle straight stitch only machine that I got about 1959 so I was mostly interested in the zigzag and decorative stitches, but thought the embroidery might be fun for the new grandchild. It only has a 4x4 field though, and it seems that everything that catches my attention requires a 5x7 or 6x10! Bad case of hoop envy here. It requires an ultimate box or similar to write proprietary cards, does not have a display to see the design you have selected, only the number on the card. It sews beautifully - I have barely touched all its capabilities. Would love one of those do-everything-but-make-coffee ones with the gigantic sewing field, but at the current rate I do projects, that would cost about $500 per project. LOL
Lillian,
I had looked into a new Viking Rose but couldn't afford it at the time. I was impressed with the machine. Maybe you could call your sewing machine repairman and ask their advice. I call my mechanic when looking at used cars and the investment is almost the same now-a-days!
ps...I updated my profile for you, might be TMI but you asked for it! ;) Good luck, may you have divine discernment, keep us informed.
Thanks cinder. I believe that is what I'll do & make sure he will work on it if I do decide to get it. *
If I remember rightly the Rose still uses embroidery cards, so you'll at least need the software, the box and an empty card to be able to use everything you downloaded. I think $1000 is a lot of money for it. And as the machine is no longer produced you might have trouble getting repairs done in a couple of years time. I have 2 Vikings, the Designer1 and the Iris, 10 and 6 years old respectively, both trouble free, but when something goes wrong in the future it might be difficult to find spare parts.
Whoa!!! Something like this was what I was wanting to hear Martine. I'm going to talk with charles, my repairman as cinder suggested & see what he has to say, I don't want something I have to wait months 'till part can be found to fix. thanks a bunch *
