Lillian, since you are lucky enough to still have a Hancocks there, check there for the pellets. I got some here when Hancocks closed. Haven't been able to find them ANY where else! yes, I think you would need to use the rice you have to cook longer than Minute Rice. It will work, but the pellets may last longer?? (My kids called that "gummy rice" as I could never get it cooked to perfection like the Minute Rice was! But they loved it anyway!)

Actually gerry we do not have a Hancocks real close. I was at the one in Decater, AL. It's about an hour and a half from me. They have a Penny's Outlet there & I like to get up there a couple of times a yr. Of course I cannot b that near a hancocks without going. *

I've never heard of an I Spy, so thanks for the info. I'll mark this for future reference they look fun. After looking at it, I would use regular rice, it doesn't break down. I use regular rice for making heat wraps. It's an old trick I learned from my grandmother. In her day you put them on top of the wood stove to heat them up, I use the microwave. Now you can buy them in the store. I accidently put one through the washer and dryer and it came out undamaged.

I think they are neat for children in church. It keeps them busy & quiet especially when it comes from grandmothers purse. *

For the objects Hancock Fabric, Michaels, HobbyLobby etc sell those dress it up embellishment buttons. They have all sorts you dont need to order them online. I put the lttle bones and fire hydrant on a dog xmas ornament. Just adds a litttle more pizazz!

Hello Lillian, Learned something new today. I Spy. never knew what it was till today. What about dried beans, lentils or peaces for filling, Rice will do too. Good luck.

I did buy 3 different sets from margescreations, but haven't made them yet. They look fairly easy. I had some of the PLASTIC pellets (not the styrofoam balls) to go in them.Styrfoam won't work. But I got several bags of buttons that are adorable at www.homesew.com and use those as the trinkets. Much cheaper. The bag of dogs & cats is really neat. Of course different buttons will work..numbers, hearts, stars, etc. Also got some neat dice in the beads section of JoAnne's. I would guess any applique would work..just put the plastic on the back side & cut out the front side of the fleece that's inside the applique so you have a clear window. Hope this helps.

Hi lbrow. I love making I Spies. Since I enjoy working "out of the box", this is how I make my I Spies. I just hoop a piece of fleece. I usually use cut-away for the stabilizer. I choose the design I want to embroider and choose a corresponding applique shape ie: little girl on a swing, applique cloud or star. I join both the designs in my embroidery machine sewing the applique shape last. I sometimes resize the design because I like working in the 4X4 hoop. Sew out the design. Do reverse applique on the shape, attaching your vinyl for the window. I do a double row of stitches around the vinyl. Before I remove the design from the hoop, I use my air erase marker to trace around the inside of the hoop. I then remove the fleece. I sew a basting stitch following the air erase guideline. That gives me a nice rounded square. Now, I put another piece of fleece , right sides together, and again using my basting stitch as a guide, sew the two fabrics together leaving an opening to turn the pouch right side out. I do another row of stitching outside the first row to make my pouch really secure. I like my bags to have a finished look and that is why I sew them this way. Turn right side out. Fill your bag with pellets and I Spy trinkets. I buy my pellets from CR's Crafts. I know I've left out many of the middle terms, but I hope you see what I mean.

I have made them and it was suggested I use rice for the filling. If you have something like a box of minute rice that you can take a scoop out of....it works great. There may be other things but the rice worked out well for me.

Hey I buy those big boxes of min. rice from sams. thanks *

bevintex by bevintex 26 Aug 2009

I wonder if minute rice would break down. Its like precooked and all you do is add hot water. Plastic pellets may be a better choice in the long run. Just my 2 cents for what its worth

I do not know about the bags, but do know that the little styrofoam balls make a TERRIBLE mess. My grandson broke a big styrofoam piece in bits the other day and we clogged the vacuum cleaner up trying to get the little balls sucked up! His dad banned styrofoam from the house.
