I think it would depend on the design, and digitizers licence.
If the design is digitized from freely available/public domain clipart or images, then you should be able to use the clipart /images to print.
If the design is digitized from the digitizers own artwork, or pay licence artwork, then it probably would not be OK.
If you take a photo of your stitched out work, and used that - I'm not sure.
Or you could ask the digitizer you got the design from, explain how you want to use it and ask if it would be ok.
I think it would also would make a difference whether you are making as gifts for friends and family or selling the items too.
Just my thoughts - I'm certainly no expert in the matter.
Thanks for your input, jasanne. I sent Embroidery Library an e-mail to see if they could shed some light on the matter.
It seems reasonable that clip art would be copyright free for the image. I know I've seen some digitized embroidery designs that are in one of my Dover clip art books. But still, one does want to know....
Therese, each designer has their own ruling on how many reproductions of their designs can be stitched out and sold - some say: no limit and/or under 25 - but it is best to check with that designer - if you plan on mass production of it. Happy stitching, Shirlene
Dear Shirlene,
Thanks for your reply. I would stitch the design on the holder, but print the design on the cards. Does that make a difference?
I would think it depends on if you were selling or giving your items away and also the volumn. But you are saying the the printing of the design - would be your picture of your embroidery work?
Very often, the design files have a jpeg picture of the design in the zipped folder. I would want to use this picture on the card stock for the note cards.
A very interesting question. I was also wondering about the same thing lots of times because the designs can be used in many ways. There should be one of our clever Cuties out there with an answer.
