After I had unpicked most of the blocks, Pauline and I laid them out on the floor at my place and this is what we came up with.

Rows 2 to 4 had already been stitched together by the 'teacher' so we left those as they were. We've already resewn the rest of the blocks into rows now I just have to sew the rows together.

As you can probably tell it's a real patchwork but Polly and I are happy that we've done the best we could with what we had.

It's a stitch as you go rag quilt and it has some hand embroidered designs in it so it is really quite nice.

Will post another pic when it's all stitched together.

Hello Meganne, so sorry I am only responding now, but also had to get something that had been neglegted, out of the way first.

I am so sorry you had such a "sad" experience with your start to quilting, but at least you had your day out, and I am sure it was quite "different" to other outings. Gosh, you even became a teacher without expecting it. LOL

I take my hat off to you, for sitting down and rather unpicking it, and not going off home too. Hope you and Pauline manage to get it looking real good. Some-one is going to find it nice and warm.

Hope you will carry on quilting, as I find it really relaxing and exciting to put all the blocks together to make something nice.

Hope the next one is going to be easier. Looking forward to seeing what the quilt looks like when you have finished it.

Hugs and God bless.

Mariƫtta

I'm sooo sorry you had such a terrible experience:( My "first" class I was suppose to learn HAND quilting...I didn't find out til after 2 classes that the whole top was "hand" pieced and they only spent 1/2 a class teaching the "HAND" quilting....AND I PAID for it!!

Can you remember Samantha in Bewitched when she used to say "Well?" in that special tone of hers?

WELL?

I enjoyed having a day out, though Pauline couldn't make it and there was only the teacher, 2 pupils, 1 Mother and 1 (not so sure what her role is), other lass named Kym and me.

I guess I would not really call it a quilting "class" as much as a quilting free for all.

I ended up teaching one of the ladies how to use a sewing machine, she hadn't used a machine in forty years and it was pretty obvious the "teacher" wasn't going to show her.

When the two students (& 1 Mother) had to leave early, then the teacher left it was down to me and the other lass to keep constructing the quilt blocks. That was when I discovered that the other student (who hadn't been shown how) had stitched her rows of blocks the wrong way and that meant the embroidered block and all the nicest patterned blocks were all facing the back.

So I spent two hours unpicking rows of blocks & Kym & I decided I should just keep going as (without any decent instructions) none of the blocks were stitched squarely enough to make a decent quilt.

I was so disheartened I ended up bringing all the blocks home and have almost unpicked them all, my reason for being absent from Cute.

I know I have no quilting experience, but I have watched enough Simply Quilts to know that the blocks have to be squared if you are making a quilt from squares. They have to be equal or when you stitch the rows together the blocks won't meet and the whole row will be crooked and the quilt will be atrocious.

Anyway, Pauline and I will fix the blocks and put them back together, hopefully a bit better than they currently are, then we'll try and sort them into a decent layout and take the quilt back in two weeks and no one will be any the wiser.

So yes, I learned a really big lesson:

if you want a decent lesson in anything, it won't be one you get for free. LOL!

Will show you pictures when I take some.

OH MY!!! What a hoot Meganne! Perhaps you should be teaching the free class. Didn't know you signed up for the Covert Quilter Class, did you. You put the purr in perfectionism, thank you for the great attitude and tenacity. Can't wait to see the picture of the do-over. Until then don't come unravelled and remember "it's hip to be square"!
Blessings Dear One!
