and some encouragement.

I have not eaten white bread in a week, I haven't snacked between meals, I've eaten mostly Chinese style, stir fried vegetables (cooked in cold pressed olive oil), chicken, some small amounts of lean red meat and fresh fruit.

I'm still having my usual breakfast of Vita Brits, un-sweetened Soy milk, natural bran, Psyllium husk (reduces collesterol and aids regularity) sliced banana & a few spoonsfull of pineapple pieces, (in natural juice not syrup).

I did have a hamburger and chips last Friday night. I mean a real hamburger, not a processed meat pattie like MucDonalds and Hungry Jack sells, but real fresh ground beef, and fresh salad. That is to be my one weekly treat.

Anyway, after I checked my pedometer and found I was walking less than 770 steps per day, I decided to try and do more steps. So instead of rounding up everything (around the house that needed putting away) in one trip I started making a separate trip for each item. In other words I stopped trying to save myself from walking so much and started deliberately finding more reasons to walk the length of the house. (I wish I had some stairs! LOL!) So my steps have gradually increased every day and today I'm already up to 2,655. I know it's nowhere near the 10,000 they recommend, but i'm getting there. I even did 5 minutes on my air walker.

So how much have I lost? THREE POUNDS!!!! YAY!!!!!!

And believe me it makes me feel good because the reality is, that even though I was making a conscience effort, it wasn't difficult and I know I will be able to keep to it. I'm not hungry and I'm not starving myself. If I do feel peckish I reach for a glass of water, and it satisfies me, so there is a lot of truth to the dietitians saying that: "often when we think we are hungry, we are really thirsty."

I've rediscovered how great it is to eat an apple or a raw carrot and the taste of fresh tomatoes on rice cakes is a pleasure I had long forgotten.

So Cuties, how did you go your first week?

I have been playing more tennis these last two weeks and have been walking my dog when I can. I do feel better when I get exercise and sleep better so those are two things are a big plus for me. I don't know if I have lost any weight yet, but at least I shouldn't gain any more. Unless I was to lose about 10 pounds I wouldn't consider it as lost weight as a person's weight can vary so easily - especially a woman's with just water weight gain/loss from day to day.

Meganne (do you know if you have your fingers on the wrong keyboard keys your name becomes Begabbe?

I've dropped 2.5 pounds and feeling great. I usually have a biscotti with coffee in the mornings, about 10 or so I have a yogurt, a light salad at lunch, and a fairly normal dinner (chicken and vegetable) at dinner. No fat, no salt. Haven't had any specific exercise unless you count chasing five of my six granddaughters around all weekend.

I leave in the morning for a three week road trip - so it will be interesting how I can do. We are packing a cooler with just healthy foods. Once we get to our destination/s I'll have to see how I can manage. I may just hit the local grocery/deli and stock up on light foods. Love the fresh fruit and yogurt though.

Hi all you wonderful Cuties on this Health Challenge. A few years ago I lost about 18 to 20 pounds of weight by just eating healthy and since then I've kept it off. Just remember fat makes fat and I truly believe it is not really sugar. I used to eat wholegrain bread with only jam on it. Further I worked out a healthy eating plan and used to serve my own food on a small plate. Just remember it is better to loose weight slowly because then you don't pick it up again as easily. And of course when you reach your goal weight be careful of what you eat afterwards. No use to go back to "normal". Another thing, remember the 8 glasses of water a day. I found that I didn't lose anything if I stopped to drink the water. Also do not cut out the things that you love completely. If you eat a biscuit - no more than 2 and so on, otherwise you crave it and go highwire. Age is no big deal - I am nearly 71 and if I could do it, all of you beauties can do it as well. Keep it up girls and good luck. Annatjie

I have been delaying posting this but I believe I lost at least 2 pounds. My scale did show a 4 lb. loss but I think it errored though my dear hubby says it is correct. He has a highly sophisticated professional scale at work and they correlate for his weight. Surely it was mostly water at that level and I obviously am dubious of the number. It is a noticable change physically though, receiving inquiries from others and I hadn't mentioned I was trying. The way my hormones swing it is a tough call so I am reserved, even more committed to persevere through both highs and lows. The number is less important to me, I enjoy feeling better!

I am reducing portions and moving more, using the "bouncy ball", yoga and keeping busy. Still had the ice cream, (hard for a dairy farmers daughter to just say no!) but not as much. Thank you Meganne for inspiring! Congratulations to all you Cuties, we can do this for ourselves and those we love!!!!!
Blessings!

Well done for making the effort, regardless of the number. It gives you such a sense of achievement just knowing you have stuck to your convictions and started on a healthier lifestyle.

I feel very guilty right now, I've been in bed with a dose of flu today and felt so ill I had only eaten 2 apples since breakfast this morning. Then just now I suddenly felt so hungry I got up and made myself two toasted cheese and jam sandwiches. This is the worst thing I could possibly do, even though it was good multi-grain bread, cheese has such a high fat content it is an absolute no-no when trying to lose weight.
Oh well, I'll just have to make an extra effort to do some more exercise when my temperature goes back to normal.

We can do it!!!

You can get a fat-free cheese (probably made from PLASTIC) and I've had some. It isn't all that bad either. I try to go for the pure natural foods though and try to avoid anything processed. But, give me some coconut surrounded by chocolate . . .

Well - this has been a very trying week, but I have cut out some of the snacks that I started grabbing. It was very busy at my job, and I know that is rough in trying to diet. But, I weigh in next Tuesday, and let's see what I have done. The mess we have with out house has stopped us from walking every evening, but we get exercise tearing up and redoing some. I did get to the gym and we did walk 2 evening, even if it were for a mile. Good job everyone - we can do it!

I Jazzercised 4 times this week instead of 3 and walked with my husband for 6 miles on Tuesday. I also got a tooth pulled (don't worry it was an easy one) which is making it a little hard to chew. I think I lost 2 pounds on jello and ice cream but I wouldn't recomemnd it on a daily basis LOL.

I'm afraid I am another one who does not weigh. It depresses me. Ever since I started working out 20 years ago, I only go by how my clothes fit. Right now, some don't button or zip, so I need to work harder. My biggest downfall is my sweetie. He likes fast food ,so I prefer to cook rather than to eat out at fast food. Sometimes it is hard when you are away all day and get a meal on the table in a few minutes. I like to use the slow cooker when I know I will be pressed for time. What do the rest of you do?

meganne by meganne 26 Sep 2009

I have quick veggie dishes, cooked in a wok, chinese style. I can have a meal on the table in thirty minutes.
Fast food is only appealing because of all the artificial additives they put in it to make people like the taste.

You can do the same thing at home with the wise choice of herbs and spices, most of which have no calories, therefore they aren't fattening.

A Canadian friend of mine amazed me when we purchased hamburgers at a fast food place, he asked for the meat pattie to be served separately, then he proceeded to take a heap of napkins, he placed the patty in the middle and pressed down. The fat from the patty went through all the napkins and then some. I was gobsmacked!!!! Try it for yourself it may just change your mind about eating fast foods.

Keep up the exercise!!! Am proud of you!!!

meganne by meganne 26 Sep 2009

Well done! A pound a week is all we are really aiming for.
Some of us will lose more initially and then slow down, others will lose less to start with and then have weeks when they'll lose more, so it all balances out.

The main idea is to do it in a natural way so that you do not feel pressured or that you are being deprived, these are negative things to be avoided.

We want to feel good about how we are re-gaining our health and fitness in a positive way by making healthier choices in the foods we eat and choosing to get up from the machine and walk around the house, go outside and walk around the block even, or just do some stretching exercises to start with. Once you start exercising and seeing the change in how your clothes fit you, it encourages you to do more.

I was going to have a Friday night treat of a Hamburger and chips, but after seeing I had lost 3 lbs, I couldn't bring myself to waste all that effort in one fattening meal, so I had roast chicken and vegetables instead. And believe me, I LOOOOOOVE my chippies.
But I really didn't miss them as the chicken & veg was delicious.

Have a great trip and enjoy your travels, just remember it's the walking and sightseeing that will help you keep the weight off, provided you can still eat healthy meals too.

Hugs n roses and come back to us safely, we'll miss you. Meganne

Come on Girl, you can do it! I would love to have a tread mill because I hate walking in the streets. Start off with just five minutes, make sure you have a good show on telly to watch, or put a book on the front, maybe your embroidery machine user guide, and read a few pages, not only will you get fitter, but you'll discover features of your machine you didn't know it had.

It sounds as though you are doing great. I have lost 2 lbs but probably when I get on the scale next time I will be two lbs heavier!! I do exercise a lot and try and watch what I eat. I just think my metabolism has slowed down considerably as I have gotten older.

meganne by meganne 26 Sep 2009

NOW, Now! No negative thoughts please.
If you have lost 2 lbs that is a fantastic result and you can keep it going.
We are WOMEN, There is NOTHING we can't do when we really want to!!!!

The problem with aging is that we become less active but we still eat they way we always have, which is usually much more than our body needs.

When you exercise, your body actually requires more food as exercising increases your metabolism. The more you exercise, the more you can eat, unless you are exercising to lose weight, then you should either reduce or improve your food intake or increase the amount of exercise you do. We all know that!

It is truly a balancing act and you would be surprised at how much exercise it takes to shed a few measely calories.

Doing 500 steps on an air walker (5 minutes) in the morning, only burns 75 calories. BUT, it increases the metabolism and helps keep it up all day which helps you burn up more than the 75 calories. I hope I've said that in a way that you understand me. You need to exercis in the morning so that you gain the benefit from it for the rest of the day.

Please stay positive, if I can do it when I'm feeling as sick as a dog, anyone can do it.

Good work Meganne, I must say I want to be real honnest with myself, and all of you. I have not been good at all. My week started upside down, and I pushed my week to start, back. I know !!! what a horrible way to start, and I accept that I am doing it wrong to start with, but will try harder this next week.
I had to go out a few times last week, and ate all wrong. (at one stage my sugar read 19,7 NOT GOOD !!!!) I am feeling like a real "dud", and this is scaring me a little. So !!! with the help of you and all the cuties, I am going to try in earnest this coming week.
I must say I have not gained. Because of my diabetes I am always trying to eat in the right way, but this week that huge piece of carrot cake came in the way, and it being my 83 year old mother's birthday, did not help neither. Not LOL.
I have also tried not to sit as much, and have gotten even my students to move a bit more. We now move further to get to the Ironing board, etc. LOL. They think it is a big joke, but all are trying to help me.
I think the thing that will help me most in the end, is the fact that I have started to drink 6 - 8 glasses of water again, and this always helps me tremendously.
We are now going into our summer, and this is also going to help, because I have a big garden and am going to try and keep a hand on it myself for a change. (hope I can fit the time in for it, but MUST !!!!)
Well, here is wishing you all a very rewarding next week. KEEP IT UP!!!!!!! Proud of you all
Love and hugs. God bless you all.
Marietta.

Naughty Marietta! (LOL!!)

OK, having diabetes means you need to be even more diligent to eat well and get plenty of exercise.

Do you watch The View? Sherry is diabetic and she recently went on an excruciating diet and exercise regime so that she could wear a swimming costume on international TV. She did it with the help of a dietitian, personal trainer and her doctor.
SHE DID IT! She succeeded! And she succeeded so well she no longer needs medication for her diabetes, as she has returned to normal.

OK, so we don't have the assistance of all those health professionals, but we have our own common sense, we have access to any diet recipes or exercise routines we might need, (on the net) and we have our won't power.

When I say won't power I mean, I WON'T eat that fatty food, I WON'T be a victim of poor health, I WON'T fall for advertising and marketing of food products that are bad for me, I WON'T be lazy and add to my health problems, can you think of other WON'Ts that will help you get fitter?

Come on Girl, You can do it! You need to make yourself and your health your main priority so that you have a life you can really enjoy.
I'll look forward to reading your achievements next week.
Hugs n love, Meganne

I don't have a scale - or one that I can find - I will have to go to the storage unit and look for it or buy a new one - not sure that I lost - but I did eat better and move more. You all are doing wonderfully. Keep it up.

Shirlene if you have not got a scale, try taking measurements, as this is sometimes a even beter measure than the scale.
Sometimes you hit a time when your scale might say you lost nothing, but you can see a difference in cm's (or inches), and this can just be the right thing to edge you on to do better. Good luck.

meganne by meganne 26 Sep 2009

You go Girl! I am so very glad you decided to join us Shirl, for your health's sake, if for no other reason. I do so worry about you and now I know you will soon be fitter and healthier and..... well, sook me is so pleased you've just made my day.
Love you dear friend, keep up the great work and if you go by measurements please only take them once a month, not weekly as you do with weight.

Here is what Jillian Michaels of the Biggest Losers says:

What the Scale Is Not Telling You!
It happens all the time. You've stayed on top of your workouts AND watched your diet every day, but then — Bam! — you hit that dreaded weight-loss plateau and can't get the scale to budge. Instead of getting angry at what the scale is saying, take a minute to think about what the scale is NOT telling you — like what a strong and healthy individual you're becoming. Do you have more endurance? Have you lost inches from your waist? Do you look better in your clothes? Don't be a slave to the scale. Weigh in only once a week, and the rest of the time just take note of the difference in how you're feeling.

meganne by meganne 30 Sep 2009

"Weigh in only once a week, and the rest of the time just take note of the difference in how you're feeling".

That is precisely what I said in my previous post.
After only one week it is a bit soon to have reached the "plateau" phase, but yes it does happen and that is when it is time to look at what the scale is not telling you.
Very good advice.
But not to be used as an excuse to get slack. From what I have seen of the biggest loser show, I do not recommend anyone follow in their footsteps as they lose weight far to quickly and take the exercise to the extreme.

We want to do it in a healthy way, that we will find easy to commit to, and easy to stick to, that way we will keep at it and we will succeed through commitment and perseverence rather than starving ourselves and dropping out.

Three pounds is wonderful!!!!! I am going to buy a pedometer and a scale today - So, I shall be a week behind you. Good luck this week coming up!*

I bought an Omron-HJ-112-Digital-Pocket-Pedometer, cheap, from an ebay seller in China:
http://myworld.ebay.com.au/pc_dig...

It's great because you can wear it around your neck or carry it in your handbag if you don't want to wear it on your waist.

Have you tried the vegetable pastas? They're really nice, just remember it isn't so much the pasta as the sauces and cheeses you put on top and the amount you put on your plate. LOL!!!

Good luck with your commitment and give it your best shot.

I mentioned in another post that I didn't weigh in this morning. I am truly encouraged though. Except for lunch out with a GD on Wednesday, I've stuck to my diet. No breads, I'm on my second pot of low-calorie soup (love that stuff). I think if I get the first 10 pounds or so off I'll truly be encouraged. My biggest obstacle is going to be my upcoming three week trip and all my meals will be out. We're planning a cooler full of yogurt and fresh fruit though. I'll report weight loss later.

You can do it Sandy.

Just remember, "nothing tastes as good as it feels to be thin".
And once you are thinner and healthier and EXERCISING you can actually eat those special foods and still keep the weight off BECAUSE you are exercising.

The last time I had to lose weight (I had quit smoking and put on 42lbs) I found that once I lost the weight and was working out regularly, I could eat almost anything and it felt so good to wear all my beautiful thin clothes.

I didn't have that horrible clothing try-out every morning. You know what I mean, when it's time to get dressed, you go through your clothes trying to find things that fit you and it is so demoralising.
I just keep remembering how good it felt to be able to open my wardrobe and know that ANYTHING I selected would fit me and would look great!
I want to feel that way again and I'm going to!

How about sharing your recipe for your low-cal soup, I'm sure other Cuties would also like to have it especially since it's going into winter in the States.

Oh absolutely! I love fresh vegetables and there are so many ways you can cook them to change the taste. We have a rice macaroni and thin rice noodles with the veggies, lots of cauliflower, carrots, beans, bok choy, celery, capsicum, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, soy sauce and chicken stock. Makes my mouth water thinking about it. And I'm starting to feel a sense of well being already. I even washed all the floors today for the first time since I had my mastectomies. It felt good!

WAY to GO GIRL!!!! If you keep it up your road to success will be a short one:) Being at a Pizza Place for a few hours 3 days doesn't help a diet...but I'm TRYING to eat at home instead:) haven't gotten on the scale YET, but I'm seriously thinking of walking there instead of the 5 minute drive...should take about 20 minutes!! THANX for the incentives!

Hey you go too girl.

If I lived that close to my work I would absolutely walk while the weather is good enough and if it was safe.

Just imagine, if you did take a brisk walk you might not even have to sacrifice a piece of pizza.

The only problem is that pizza has so many calories you could only have one slice, and who can stop at one???? Not me if I started? LOL!!!

I've resisted the temptation, so far and I even had roast chicken and vegetables tonight instead of my Hamburger. It was really enjoyable.
Hugs n love, Sis
