I study for my college courses. This way I feel less guilty for spending time sewing b/c i am after all doing my school work too :)
Good for you. Fortunately I don't have to study for school anymore but there is still a lot to be learned. :)
Dear Angie,
This is how I feel about leaving my machine-I don't!
This little poem is to be sung to-
"YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE"
this song was sung by Gerry and the Pacemakers in the great musical Carousel by Rogers and Hammerstein - please forgive me for the poetic licence.
When you walk in your room
And see your sewing machine
Don't be afraid of the sounds
It's just the needle going
Through its many stitches
Till it reaches the end of the line.
Don't leave your machine!
Don't leave your machine!
For the pain is too much to bear
Sit down try to relax and enjoy
those funny sounds but you'll
never be the same.
Go on, go on, with hope in your heart
And your machine will live for ever.
Watch it like a hawk,
Watch it like a hawk,
And you'll never leave it alone
NO, You'll never leave it alone.
Love and blessings Chris
I do the ironing or sew on other machines or I make cards or prepare my next project - I learn't never leave your machine, I guarantee if I walked to the kitchen to make a cuppa, something would have gone wrong !!! yet many times i just watch in facination at the stitching STRANGE lol
I do handwork, or go to the cute site or work on tidying up my designs on the computer, read my Bible, study my S.S. lesson, write notes on cards I'm sending or get caught up on magazines I haven't had a chance to look out. sometimes I'm working on laying out a design on the computer for a shirt or article I'm going to embroidery. *
You sound like a multi tasker too. With the FSL the machine makes some worrysome noises because of the density. I am always afraid of doing something else.
When I have a large order to do ,I am hooping the next one to get it ready. My husband brings me lunch and often times eats with me in my crowded sewing room. I have never left the machine running, I am afraid something bad will happen if I leave. I do enjoy watching it create the design or logo. I really should be organizing my room, maybe this week.HeeHee. Lynn
Ah Ha. I need to buy another hoop. Something else to put on my wish list.
I stay with my machine also, but I've been known to knit socks while wating. Always busy!
I am always busy myself, that is why I had such a hard time to sit there for almosy an hour. My daughter just discovered my hand knitted socks. Good idea. She wants some for Christmas.
I try to work on my quilts I have started or other sewing projects while my machine is running.
Good for you. I love most crafts but quilting isn't one of them. I admire anyone that does this kind of art. Maybe someday I will give it another try.
I sometimes watch TV while sitting in front of the machine. Or sometimes I read a book, get started on getting fabric and design ready for my next project. Sometimes I iron which I do not like to do and sometimes I even try and clean up and organize my sewing room while the machine is working.
You are not the first one that mentioned ironing. I am afraid I would trip over the cord or board trying to get to the machine should she act up. HA,ha
Hi cuties great posts,I hate ironing so i do it at the same time as i enbroider,it seems not to build up this way and my machine is neve alone.
Somehow I am scared of the ironing activity. I am glad it works for you. My husband used to say "Hide something on the bottom of her ironing basket and she will never find it".
It seems 2 me we all have this "what do u do" in common. My answer is the same as all the other Cuties here. I am really addicted and even look 4 excuses on a Saturday and Sunday to do embroidering. And now the FSL!!!!! The bug has bitten there too.
I love watching it stitch out. It is hard to stay away. It seems to behave better when close by (HaHa :):):))However, I do try to use the computer or get another one set up.
Oh yes, I know that too.
My janome is a diva and I'm always have to stay in the same room. For that I have placed her now on the pantry between kitchen and livingroom right in front of the aquarium (you see she has her own entertainment-program ;-). Because I stay most of the day with my kids (7 and 2) on the groundfloor that's the best solution; otherwise I could only stitch in the evening and that is too loud so near to the sleepingrooms.
A friend told me she put on the baby-phone when she leaves the room while stitching because her machine also starts making trouble when feeling lonely :o)
greetings
ansalu
Ha, Ha. I wonder if the advertisement says embroidery machine monitor instead of baby monitor.
Angie, when stitching FSL I love watching the creation of it - like magic as other's have said - but I too can get bored with it, so I have my PC close by - not only can I answer a question, post a comment or a project - I can get my next design ready for stitching or organize my files. I have gotten to know - when the sounds of the machine are not right - you will, too. I do answer & write email to numerous people around the world, too. I also dabble in a couple other projects, from time to time, like genealogy and preservation of photo's. I love talking to many others via the phone and they have come to understand that I am always doing embroidery work - they almost can tell now - when the machine has stopped and I am changing colors of thread, Hehehe! But as other's have said, if you leave the room - the machine can sense it - just like a little child, that demands your attention at all times. Hehehe! Actually, when I find a design that will stitch from start to finish - I love it and enjoy seeing if the machine will allow me to step out of the room - I watched a movie - while stitching out Yoriko's doilies - Hehehe! Have fun with your embroidery, especailly the FSL. *4U
Thanks Shirlene. You really sound like a multi-tasker. I will give that a go.
Stay in the room while the machine is running. If I am stitching a new design I often watch as it stitches out, I find it interesting to watch as the design appears. Otherwise like the others I tidy up and prepare for the next bit of work. My sewing room is for fun time - sewing. Ah the radio is on sometimes
It is interresting to watch. I am repeating the same pattern which after a while is loosing it's appeal. Hi hi
I am so very lucky to have a room in which I can do many different things. While my machine is embroidering, I usually do other sewing, now also quilting, teaching, etc, etc. I am also blessed to be able to multitask, and so enjoy doing the different things together.
The best is that my computer is right next to my embroidery machine, so that I can also chat to all on cute while embroidering.
Sometimes it is also nice to see the machine doing its work. Usually when I have a real lazy day.
Hugs and God bless.
Marietta
I have a wonderful room as well. I think I have to rearrange it so I can do others things as well
I always stay in the room were my machine is and do somthing else, stitching on my other machine, cut the next project, answer e-mails etc. just like most of the other Cuties. I'm afraid leaving the room incase there will be somthing wrong with my machine.
I have my pc next to the embroidery machine, so I can watch it while I'm digitizing. :) Sometimes I leave it doing it's miracle, but my ears are turned on to some odd sound :)
Love, Yoriko
Is it not funny how attunes our ears get to the sound of our machines. You can immediately hear when it is not doing the work right.
Do not leave the room now either, because if I do something goes wrong for sure.
I look at e-mails- cute and have Ann the Gran catalogue to look through for next project or load my freebees on,put them in the right place, so I can easily find them again.
I stay in the same room. I sew on another machine, are here on Cute, read and write my emails, digitize, sort out my designs or just stare and see it doing its magic; just like the others. Don't trust my machine to behave when I'm not there - but sometimes nature calls and who am I to resist.
I always stay with the machine. I machine is always afraid I abandon her, as soon as I leave something goes wrong ! and when i stay she's alright and doing great.
I agree with Meganne, but I have left it on a few times, forgetting to put it off, but thank goodness nothing bad has happened. Hugs Yvonne
So you did an "embroiderer meditation" in absent-mindedness- think about all the stressed people who pay a lot of money to reach this level!
Congratulations!
I agree with all: never leave the machine alone while stitching, this will cause trouble.
My machine is very loud and it is hard to stand the noise. I always put some ear plugs in and do the cutting for the patchwork while the machine is working (because most items I embroider are patches for never finished quilts).
But Marji had a new idea for me and I am very thankful for this: put out my crayons and draw.
I forgot about how much fun this is!
Greetings!
Eva
Oh boy, did I learn a lesson this week. I'm working on a quilt, using my quilt-all hoop. Well, it was working like a charm, so I left the room to do something, and came back to re-hoop for next square. The design had finished stitching, but the hoop had come apart, so there were about 2,000 stitches, all in a 2 inch square. Because the design is the same on back side of quilt, I can't just cover it up. From now on, when using Quilt-all hoop, I will be watching it like a hawk! Earshot wouldn't have helped.
Yikes. That is a lot of stitches in one place. I gues one has to be close enough to be able to shut the machine off instantly
Well, hate to admit it, I do watch, too! Regular embroidery because if I don't it will mess up, guaranteed. If I sit there, nothing will go wrong. FSL, because it amazes me. I watch those stitches and see not only the digitizing, which is remarkable, but the computer programming that went into the digitizing program and the machine, the lines and lines of intricate code that allows this lace to happen when I press the "start" button. Easily amused, I guess. Mechanical things I 'get', but computers and computer sewing machines, well that's pretty close to 'magic'. Yeah, I stare. So I'm there when the bobbin runs out & the machine keeps stitching, hee hee hee. Hugs, Marji
Thanks Marji. I found it very interresting, but almost an hour was a little too long to keep my attention.
I sit by my machine...look and dl on the computer and crochet at the same time mostly.......well that was when I had dial up ...now I either dl or crochet not both.....
I think I will find something to do, while keeping an eye and ear on the machine. Good ideas
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, (I think you get it, LOL!)
Never walk away and leave your machine embroidering.
You know how they say a watched pot never boils, well it has nothing to do with our finnicky embroidery machines which can turn a slipped stitch into a disaster in a matter of seconds while your back is turned.
Yes I sit and watch it, or I am beside it listening to every sound it makes, so that at the instant something changes I am "Johnny (Megsie) on the spot" to jump right in and stop it BEFORE disaster strikes.
What do I do? I answer emails, or Cute posts, I try and digitise, I do hand sewing repairs, I tidy up my work area, I crochet. Sometimes I might Iron, (I don't make that choice very often, LOL!!!) I edit the next design ready for stitching or I will sew projects together on the other machine.
If I have to leave the room, I will stop the embroidery machine until I return.
I've had three close calls this week and each one had the potential to cause major damage. Thankfully, I don't break my own number one rule.
NEVER leave the embroidery machine while it is running.
Hugs n love, Meganne
I promise I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER walk away and leave my machine alone. Gee Meganne you can scare a girl to death.
Hahaha! It's like an addiction. I still watch a lot of the time! *4u
My machine is in my room, along with my computer and television. Often all three are on. I'll watch TV and play around on the computer while I keep an ear out for the embroidery machine for color changes, or possible mishaps.
I have a TV in my craft room as well, but the noise level really went up if I tried to watch TV as well. I will move the computer close by.
