My Mon used to do this with a similar recipe. She poured batter into saved veg cans and covered tops with wax paper or foil and tied string around can and steamed in a large pot with water added and a lid on top. We called it Boston brown bread and it was good ,a real special treat!! Wonderful memories!
My Aunt would do it in the tins. Either way it is a great pudding. Thanks for your comments. Lynn
I have always done mine in the oven. I use a tall bowl, cover the top with parchment paper. Get a large piece of brown paper fold a pleat in the middle and then place over the top of the bowl. Tie it down tight with cord. (This prevents water entering the bowl) Fill a roaster pan with boiling water and place the bowl in the water. I then cover the roaster and bowl with aluminium foil making sure all edges are sealed. BE CAREFULL LIFTING IT INTO THE OVEN. Keep an eye on the roaster making sure it does not boil dry, add boiling water if necessary. Gives you a lovely moist pudding. Use a high heat to keep the water steaming.
We have always done it in a steamer, but if people don't have one this is a great way to do it. Thanks for sharing this idea. Lynn
Sounds delicious. And no I won't wait until Christmas to try it!Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, this sounds wonderful. Will give it a try. I wonder if this could be cooked in a crockpot. H&*.
I have only done it in a steamer. Proably any pot with a lid will do that you can raise the bowl with the pudding in above the water so it will steam. Hope this helps. Lynn.
Oh, my, sounds wonderful! Now, what's a steamer? I have a bitty basket to steam veggies in, but have never needed anything bigger, apparently. Would it work to put a rack in my big canning kettle, with the dish on the rack up out of the water? And you'd cover it, too, I'm assuming. Ok, hey, I'm Russian/Polish, we BOIL stuff to death, and often stuff you don't even want to know what it is! Hee hee hee, seriously, would really like to know what y'all steam that's big. Also, I'm gluten-free, so do you suppose I could use rice flour or tapioca flour as a substitute? Hugs, Marji
The google ads to the side struck me funny, I got one for Grandma's fruit cake, and how to bust belly fat, hee hee hee. So, which is it gonna be? Can't have both...
It would or should work with your canning kettle. Yes you do cover it. I don't know about the flour bit, but I sure it should work. I have a canning kettle that has a steamer insert. It just sits in the top of the kettle. It has alot of holes in it to let the steam come up and around the pudding. Good luck, let us know if it works with your gluten-free flour. Hugs Lynn
I always use my crock pot.Just put a rack in the bottom(I use a small cake rack),add about 1-2 cups of water( warm) and let it steam for all day (6-8 hrs.) I do this to reheat them too...make mine in mason jars if I'm doing a large amount and put them in the canning kettle with seals. When you want one just pop it in the crock pot as mentioned above...works like a charm!!
Have a great day everyone!! "Chenille"
Thanx, sounds really good!!! I've always wanted a recipe for this! **
Sounds delish Lynn. I'll have to try it. *
Thanks Lillian, we make it every year for Christmas. My Grandmother use to make it then my mother and now I do.
