I'm sorry to hear what happened. I need to make another backup, just in case. I LQQK forward to you giving us the GOOD NEWS about receiving a NEW HD for CHRISTMAS *2U
Guess we are in the same boat. My computer crashed last Sat. and it is still with my repair person. I am using hubby's computer. I was lucky enough I had all my designs backed up on to an external hard drive. I managed to save the designs, my financial information and my photos. Hopefully I will have computer back here on Monday/
Thanks for your comment. we cannot be reminded enough times. Laura
If you had the designs backed up on cd or dvd, it might not have finalized. Also try to open it on another computer if you can.
Are you actually following the restore from backup procedure?
It all depends on EXACTLY what it was you selected to back up,,,, if it was your whole drive then the backup should restore to any hard drive.
The operating system should not prevent the backup restore from working, but it does need to have all the programs and folders available to restore the data back to.
But if you only backed up your data you need to install all your programs and set up your computer so the files will have somewhere to restore to.
Think of it as taking your drawers out of one chest of drawers and trying to put them back into someone else's chest of drawers made by a different company than yours. Yours won't fit.
I hope this simple explanation helps.
If all else fails, take your computer to a pc technician and get them to help you. It is often the best and cheapest way out, rather than trying to save a few dollars and ending up losing everything including your sanity.

The pc will be going to a technician. He may be able to save the designs. Untll then I am trying to download whatever I can remember so at least I will have some.
I don't really understand computers. I will have to work on this. Thanks for the information.
I have put all my designs on a 8GB USB Drive called Verbatim Store'n'GO purchased at Sam's Club for under $20...that way you will not loose your designs when computer crashes. Sorry to hear of your bad luck.
OH Dear, I hope when you say a USB drive you do not mean a USB stick, and if it is just a stick then I truly hope that it is not your ONLY storage device.
USB sticks are not stable, they corrupt very easily, plus they can break very easily.
If you are relying on one lonely little stick to store your valuable designs then I suggest you give a lot more thought to your choice.
Firstly you should be making multiple copies on DVD's or CD's and then you should be backing up ALL your data at least once a week, onto a portable HARD Drive.
USB Sticks are not meant for permanent storage solutions, they are for quick access to data, to carry around more easily than carrying your whole computer.
But then you should be VERY careful of transferring data from friends computers onto your USB stick as it is very easy to also transfer viruses (that you don't think to scan for until it is too late) and your USB stick containing all your data is compromised beyond recall.

Have you seen some of the newer USB sticks - I guess they are actually ok - but you pay much more than $20 for them. Those $20 ones are like you said very unstable. My son says Vista is partiuarly bad....We have found that every microsoft operating system has bugs in it when it is new. I have xp now and my magic box barely works with it. I will not be able to upgrade to vista even when it is stable. My boss here likes MACS and says that I should switch but my son is a network administrator and he works with PCs - If I switched I would loose my tech support. Like you said the best solution is to have 2 or 3 backups of different kinds. I need to back my system up again. Meganne you are very very smart lady. 0:D
