My mother in law is a fantastic lady, a farmers wife with a strong and creative mind. She has woven carpets from old clothes that makes any room look wonderful. She told me how they used the leftover from cutting scraps from jeans and other pants to sew balls for children. You know the part where the legs come together - it looks like a triangel and is too short for weaving. Anyway, those parts were sewn together with a base like small boat. It was filled with sheeps woll and then put together in threes and finally 12 into a ball. Kids love them cause they are easy to hold and catch, with all the small open spaces between the boats. This was when she was young in the beginning of the 20th century. A while ago I saw a similar patter - I think at Cuties designs - and was happy to see that the patterns is international! Here are some of the balls I have prepared, a few with embriodery and others with just scraps. They make lovely presents and sewing them is nice entertainment in front of the TV...

Don't know where the idea originated, but my ancestry is German on one side & have seen these done by my grandmother yrs. & yrs. ago & hear her say her mother made them for toys for the young ones. *

Very pretty. *4U
I've made those from the circles I cut out when making over-the-head bibs out of guest towels.
