Glad Martine could help u out with this Elizabeth. Be sure & post your table cloth when u finish it. *
Just over a year ago I made a cloth to go over a coffin, size 1.40 x 3.40 mtr. I used my serger to get a rolled edge (used 3 needles), approx. 3 mm wide, set close together. Looked like satin stitch but was so much faster to do. Used a 1000 m spool of polyester embroidery thread (more than enough)for the needle and serger thread in the right colour - which I happened to have - otherwise embroidery thread could have been used.
Years ago I read in an embroidery magazine to use the satin stich of a normal sewing machine. Round one small fairly narrow satin stitch, cut back to the edge and round 2 the desired with and stich length.
Try out both methods on a remnat and see what you prefer.
