Directions for Pulse: 1. Go to Tools:click on configuration, user settings, thread charts and choose the type of thread you will be using. 2.Open a pes file that you have changed from dst. 3.The colors used in that file are the blocks in the lower left hand corner of the screen. 4. Click View and check next to Draw Ribbon. This will put the color draw ribbon above your design with the play button on the same line. Click on the play button. This stitches the file and you can watch where the different colors are being used. You can also click on the + to magnify the design if a color is hard to figure out where it is actually being used. Sometimes it is in the eyes and quite small. 5. To change the color - right click on the colors in the row at the botton left one at a time. Right click will open a box. Click on Thread Change. This opens the thread chart you changed to earlier in the tools box. Click on the new color you want for that part of the design. I change each one and then save the new deign to your file. I always use the same name to save it but add aa after the name. I always like to open them both in Ped Basic and see how differently they look. Works great! Hope the directions help. I had to experiment with it.Sometimes the design colors aren't exact as the original but you can get pretty close. Depends on type of thread you use and the variety of colors you have available on your chart. It is lots of work but it is fun to do. Hope I didn't leave something out. Nanc
Problem with DST is that it never uses true colours, just a number of contrasting colours to show the colour changes so that your machine stops ( or moves to the next needle in case of multi-needle machines). When I download freebies in DST and they don't have colour charts, I copy the picture or make a note of the colours used. Not that I often use the exact colours, I mostly chosse the to go with the background material.
I use the DST format, and when I first started embroidery,I contacted the site I bought some designs from. She sent me a nasty message back saying your machine tells you what color to use what do you need color charts for. WELL, some people don't know that the DST does not show the actual colors like the pes format does. I blocked her site as I won't order from people who get nasty with me. Most people I find have a photo and or color sheet of the designs they sell so I'm able to see what colors they used and go from there. Many of my deisgns, I have to chose my own colors without a photo. If a photo is availible, I try to save the photo with the design so I have something to go on.
Jacqueline I don't know if this will help you and it is very time consuming to do BUT I try to go to the site that has the design offered (Dakota < maybe embroidery.com because they sell a lot of Dakota designs/sets, Emblibrary < they have horrible colors on their designs) and I look at the picture of the design and get ideas of what colors I need to use. Sometimes if a picture of the design is not available I will google ie: dots candy pics and when the google page comes up I will click on images in the top left and then all the pages that have pics of dots candy will come up and I get an idea of what colors dots candy is. It is very time consuming when you have a design that has 15 colors in it but well worth it if you love the design you want to use. I have a few different softwares and none of them will do a true color change from DST. I get lucky sometimes when a DST file has a bear holding a flower and the bear is purple and I convert to PES and the bear is green... well I know bears are black, brown or white so it's a no brainer to change the colors. I wish there was a simpler way and if your Q finds it I will be almost as happy as you!
I am so sorry I did not see the picture of the design posted. Now that I have, the dog looks to be a brittany spaniel I did a google search ( brittany spaniels pics )and on page 7 found this one that is very similar
http://artbynewlifestudio.com/wp-...
and I use that photo for my color choices.
Thanks a lot; the reason I put up the picture of the spaniel was to encourage anyone with information about how to convert without guessing each little color. Will follow your advice on pictures that I really love; may save the others for later.

Download this program. I use it to change the colors to pes. You can click on the color at the bottom and a box opens for thread change then click on a new color. It will let you enlarge the picture so you can see the tiny parts. It also does a drawing showing the design stitch out from start to finish. I use it all the time. Good luck.
Buffeebabee, does this mean you change the colours 1 at a time the way the others are talking about by guessing based on how the design stitches out? Sounds painfull. I suppose we should down load pictures with each design.
Thanks for your advice and for linking me to a program to d/l. Will try this out in the morning when my URT is acting better.
Why is it that so many of the designs don't come with color charts? My machine shows the design in black and white, so with out a color chart, I'm sunk. I've even purchased a membership only to find out that most of the designs came without any support files.I purchased the cd and ended up with thousands of designs that I can't use. Is it legal to give them to someone as long as I'm not using them?
Oh dear; be careful. I knew a woman who had bought some designs on e-Bay, and was charged a huge fine.
I dont want to sell them, just give them to someone who can use them. Is it common to get designs without support docs? These are from a site that's mentioned everyday here at cute.
Technically, it is not legal for you to sell or give away the designs in digital format (IE the CD you purchased).
Have you contacted the person/company that you purchased from to try and get color charts, etc? That would be my first suggestion. If you can't get that documentation, ask what you can do with the CD that you can't use. If you can get permission from the designs' copyright owner (get it in writing if possible), you can then sell or give them away as desired.
As to Jacquipaul and her friend that got "fined" for purchasing off of eBay, I suspect that it was a group that is/was running a scam on people who purchase pirated designs online. They threaten the sellers with law suits to get lists of their customers, and then send letters that mention law suits, followed by asking for a "fee" and for the illegal designs to be returned. Then, they wait for people to "bite". As far as I know, there has NEVER been a single law suit filed by these crooks, and they are not actually a legal entity to begin with.
cutiepie. you're a cutie pie. thanks so much for your input. I have tried on several occasions to get ahold of the vender, but never get an answer. Tks for the help, sandy
Jacqueline, I have several designs turn out that way, and I just start to change colors one at a time, but it takes a lot of time to do this. Judy
Thanks Judy; one at a time was that way I imagined it to be. Will re-color only as I need to sew them out.
I know that, same with me too. mostly I try to change the colors in lay out and editing by thinking what colors does it have to be, For instance with this dog: the eyes are brown. the blue under the eye ought to be white, the nose is black, the green is probably light brown.and so on by changing in layout and editing( I can change that by looking at the order of colors)I see the design gets the normal look.(in case there's no colorchart.) Hope this works for you too.
Whew; thanks Gerry. I'll give it a try. Have hundreds of DST designs that need some help.
Hi I would just like to let you know that Dst only uses 4 colours and that is why you have a problem with them.
You will need the colour charts where possible.
The designs that are sold on cd in large quantities are pirated designs. The reason you have no colour charts on them is because they are pirated and these people know that the colour charts often hold the owners info and so they delete it.
I know there is a group trying to stop the pirating but they are legit. They will be taking people to court as they are gathering evidence but they should not be asking you to pay anything. Whoever is doing that may be a seperate bogus group.
People are under the false impression that digitisers are rich but they are not. It is a lot of hard work and skill that goes into digitising and we barely scrape a living out of it because of all the pirating that goes on and so many excellent digitisers have stopped altogether. The people that buy pirated designs are actually putting the designers out of business and very soon the only available designs will be from poor quality digitisers and the very expensive brand names and so in the end they will be paying far more than they currently do.
To the lady with the Cd. You cannot sell or give that CD away because it is pirated and the only people that sell those cds are pirates.
I hope this helps everyone to understand a bit.
A lost of hard work goes into digitising
Here's an example of a free design unzipped from a RAR file, to a DST. I'm guessing the dark green on his nose might be black.
if it is possible to get the color chart before u purchase it on the picture you look at then you may be able to save the picture and chart. usually i will do this before i changed the format so i have it correct. i also have started to do a print out right away so i have it and place it in a folder & then i also have it to go back on w/o puter and others can see designs as well to sew out. sometime a cutie ahs forgotten when they got a design & if i have it the print out tells where it comes from usually. have fun. grammy
