Mylar is a paper, right? How does it react to water if you wash the garment you use it on?
I've been told that there are different types of mylar and the one at the $ store is not for use on clothing to be washed. I would try it on a scrap before ruining something you would want to keep for nice. heirloomsbysharon is where I buy my mylar and it washes and drys nice in dryer.
why not use this<br />Angelina fusible film....maybe easier to find
I don't have trouble finding it and the link I gave she has very reasonable prices
not too keen on it being only 4' wide either
I noticed a lot of hers is sold out also
and she doesn't give a lot of info about how to use or what not to use like Sharon does
Baydreamer here is a link for some very useful info
The mylar I used was the for gift wrapping, but I still think I would put heat to it befor I used it.
mylar? Why I thought i would put some heat to it, nope can't due. Therefor could not iron it, most likely will not be able to throw it in dryer. So my question is why use it?
If you are using a paper or synthetic material like that how does it launder and iron. I would much rather use a material or synthetis cloth.like an organza pr some other shiny or ornate material.I read in one of the tutorials that the gift wrap mylar is not the one you use for embroidery.
Thank you so much. I have been looking everywhere for this paper. I just came back from the American Embroidery Conference in Atlanta,Ga. They used it on butterflies, flowers, and mermaids. I just finished a fairy quilt and now that it is finished I find this mylar. I paid 4.00 a sheet for it! I'll be at party city tomorrow for more, just to have it! I have some designs for mylar, but I think the main thing is to have a design with a lot of stitches kind of close to together, but room enough for the mylar to show through. I just bought a design set from OregonPatch works, but haven't stitched it out yet. Can't wait!
I have a feeling we should buy this before the price goes up. i think Mylar is going to be a hot item!!
Yes I used it about 4 yrs ago. My Daughters Mother-in-law brought it for me in Fl USA & I stitched out a lot of snowmen which I gave everyone for Christmas. the design has to be sparse so the milar shows through. It gives a good sparkle. Haven't used it on anything thats needs washing but I understand that it will take a couple of quick dips.
Have fun with it. I can't remember where I got the design from as I had only just started & I saved everything together. *4u
As I read all of the answers, I wondered why would this not work for any applique designs. Why would they have to be designs that just say Mylar? H&*
Because mylar designs lightly stitch over the mylar to hold it in place and let it shine through the threads. It is almost like having an applique design that has stipple in it. The applique part or mylar part of the design still has stitching on it just very sparse so that the mylar shimmers through the thread.
Please be patient with me to experiment with Mylar. It is still in the works. Just been busy. I welcome anyone with experience!!
I really do want to see how these look stitched out. this perks up my curosity. *
If I understand, Mylar is a metalic paper. What if you wash the item, does it stay nice? Which needle do you use?
It is the shimmery kind of plastic "tissue" paper for using with gift wrap. Not metallic at all. Use a reg embroidery needle it is just like doing an applique design. Check this site for more info.

Make sure if you get mylar it isn't the dyed kind. It should only be pearly-iridescent. The colored ones that are red, purple whatever the dye washes off.
Oh boy, this is making me very curious!!! :D
I'd need to stitch one of these designs. Kay, let us know how it went :) Hugs, Yoriko
Also found embroidery collectibles have mylar designs. Hugs
Here is the place that I know of they have some real cute ducks and bunnies to make with mylar. Hugs Lisa
Katy go to digifavs she advertises for some one that digitizes design especially for mylar. Will go have a look be right back. hugs Lisa
I have not tried this yet, but do know you can find Mylar in several place. It comes in different ways, from whole rolls, to gift wrap (tissue like), and then there are the strings that you could maybe use as collage (just a thought). Has anyone taken old deflated balloons and used them? Just curious?
For anyone who has done this, what is the difference in a regular design & a mylar design? When I went to the web site, They said applique designs. Do you cut it like an applique, & leave the middle or cut all around? Sounds interesting but I don't understand it? The prises on these sets was pretty expensive. Thanks Pat
It is just like an applique for the mylar part of the design. You trim away the excess just like you do in applique.
I bought Mylar at Dollar Tree here in Charlotte, NC around Christmas time and have seen it a few times since. It is like you say in a package like tissue paper right beside the tissue paper. Some it even had hologram shapes in it. Do you actually stitch on it? That's a new one for me. I have some I guess I can give it a try. Why not-if you stitch on toilet paper anything is fair game right?
Yes, I understand you stitch on it and trim like applique and it gives that iridescence look. Some thing new!! I was hoping you would help me!!
I just went to the web site and put Mylar wrap in search and nothing came up, them I put the item # 186076 and it came up as metallic iridescent sheets 5 @ $3.99. Not a bargain!!! I paid $1.99 at store location. at least it is a source if all else fails!! Kay
You can use mylar in fsl designs for a beautiful metallic look or in designs that have some open work. Not dense designs because the mylar will be hidden. At the Dollar Store the brand is Voila Tissue Wrap or Holographic Tissue Paper. In flat packages with the tissue paper and bags. Also on some of the end cap displays.
