There was a question about backing on coasters, but do they not stain straight away with wine or coffee? Is there a clear sealer I wonder one could use for the top? so you can wipe it clean

my first thought was the iron on vinyl laminate. i have seen it at some small quilt shops. of course any amount of liquid, like a lot of dripping condensate will just roll off the coaster and oto the surface that way.

i have a plastic backed felt and that might work well. if embroidered on teh felt would hold moisture, but at some load point it could wick to surface below....so i guess i would just slide it under the hoop at the end have it stitch to the border of the coaster. then i would cut it out with a heated knife to seal the edges...just thinking.

Seeing that it is so thin what about laminating is this to thick? Then you can cut it out in circles. Just a suggestion .Love Marie

Looked on line and there seems to be no problem with Mod Podge in the UK, thanks so much for the suggestion. It looks the ideal thing to use

Do you paint the Modge Podge on top of the embroidery? Does it make them stiff? This sounds interesting. I have only used a spray starch on the ones I have made.

Nadyne, you paint the Modge Podge over the embroidery as well as the rest of the material. I used it over Serviette Podge as well and it work like magic. And it does not matter if your coaster is stiff because the ones you buy made of wood is a hard thing. Just wipe with a wet cloth and walla it is clean. Just try it and enjoy.

Thanks, I'll have to try that!

That is a really good question. I've made a number of coaster sets, but never gave it a thought that'd they would get stained. I'm going looking for Mod Podge too. Thanks so much for the suggestion!!! Marion

Check out the fabric stores. I have found a clear plastic with a coating that you just iron on. It is sold by the yard. I finished a blender cover with it a few years ago and recently I bought some more to go on appliance covers. I think I found it a JoAnns fabric shop. Mildred

Hi Edith,
Try coating with Mod Podge sealer.

There are dozens of fabric sealants on the market, just browse the glue section of your nearest Hobby and crafts or Art store or even some hardware stores carry them in the hobby section.

Many years ago (35+) Hobbytex used to have a sealant for their products so you could use them as placemats. Oddly enough, come to think of it their "fabric" was really only what we now use as Stabilisers.

Hugs n roses, Meganne

How about vinyl? It embroiders nicely and shouldn't stain.

I wonder if Scotchguard might work also. They wouldn't be as stiff as with the Mod Podge, but liquids bead up and roll off without staining. Guess it depends on the look you are going for.

My dear Modge Podge will do the trick for you. Put on 2 or 3 coats on front and at least 1 or 2 at the back. I made myself a fairly big rectangle for working on in the kitchen and did it that way. Am using it for 6 to 7 years and it is still beautiful as in the beginning. Enjoy your coasters.
