I use flexible (kitchen) cutting boards, available in packs of 2 from the thing-um-me-bob discount shops - cost around $3 (Aust). You can rule lines with a biro, then cut out with scissors to whatever shape required. Cover with a fabric sleeve and either sew the edge of the sleeve into a bottom seam of the bag, or else if the bag design doesn't allow for this, sew press studs in place, the female side onto the bottom of the bag and the male side to the fabric covering of your cutting mat and press into place. These cutting mats are a kind of product a bit like thin template plastic and very durable. Good luck. Mufti

Such clever ideas; I had thought of a few, but our Cuties are very clever!
Good job one and all.

Lena Mae, you sure got some good answers - I have seen the plastic that is already cut for the bottom of bags in shops before - but I like these idea's much better - Hehehe!

I make lots of shopping bags and I use cut up pieces of plastic canvas - in a pocket like bunnylane suggests. Is really stable and washable too.

I have used corflute in the past, it is a plastic corrugated carboard substitute, here in australia it is used for signs, like for lease etc, if you go to your local signwriter they may have some off cuts that you can get for free. Cut it so that the corrugations run up and down on the short side, it will be strong that way so bag will not collapse on its length

I cut strips of plastic canvas, make a pocket with one end left open and slide them into that then whip stitch closed. make them the length of the bottom of bag.

Go to a second hand store and tell the clerks what you need I bet they will find the perfect thing maybe like rubbermaid containers you can cut with a blade. Or buy a sheet of Corrugated Plastic Sheets it is big enough you will have a lot left over for future projects.
Or go to a craft store and get some corkboard.
