I have used a wing needle, a twin needle and a triple needle on my embroidery machine with excellant results.
1. Accent threads stitched with triple needle
2. Insert of lace stitched with wing needle

Sorry back again, what kind of designs are good for this, the wing needle leaves a tiny hole in the fabric.
The wing needle is made to leave the tiny hole as part of the design that it makes when you use it with heirloom embroidery work - especially if the design is made for the wing needle.
This is probably a dumb question, but what is a heirloom needle?
Well for me heirloom needle is the wing needle. I just finished a project and I used it all around the runner it gives a nice finished to any hemstitch.
If the hole in your throat plate is large enough, YES. I have used both a sword needle and a twin one on my Designer 1. Husqvarna even has special designs to that purpose.
Stand alone machines usually have a small hole and not the wider slit sewing/embroidery machines have. So both my Brother190D and my 4-needle machine only take 'normal' needles.
i had the same question in my mind. Can we use wing needle and how?
You can only use a wingneedle with your machine if it will fit through the needleplate - mine is a dedicated embroidery machine (PR600II), and so only has a small hole for the needle to fit through, but a combination machine would probably be able to use one.
Mary I saw a article a year or so ago but I can't remember where ;D *2U
Moto it does seem like a combo machine should be able too ;D
