I've done machine cross stitch on quilting cotton and even on denim with good results. I usually use med wt. tearaway and I always float a second piece under the hooping for more stability. I do this with all dense designs as well and it seems to stop most of the puckering you can get. Make sure you use the right needle for the fabric you are using.

I've done it on felt and it looks beautiful. I made bookmarks.
Have not had problems using cotton fabric, but have not used a thick or stiff fabric.
Good luck!
I'm sure glad you asked this question...I was going to but you beat me to it! haha!
Hugs, Nadyne
I have never done xstitch, I see the designs and they look so complicated, Do you have to change color thread frecuently? Thank you
Depends on how many colours in the design. Also you need to snip the jump threads as they appear so that they don't show beneath the stitching.
Websites selling cross-stitch designs usually have good information about getting the best results. EmbLibrary might be a good place to start looking.
AlmaG.
I like to use a fabric that has a clear weave so it looks as if I've counted the threads! I haven't tried Aida. It would look great if the stitches were lined up with the blocks but I don't think I could achieve that.
Dear Moyed,
I usually use cotton with Cross-stitch but as I see other people have used other types of fabrics. I also make sure I double stablise the design.
I love cross-stitch designs. They always come out beautifully.
Love and blessings Chris
I do cross stitch on any kind of fabric, just be sure you have stabilizer( I prefer med wt) when you cross stitch. Actually I love doing cross stitch. *
Thank you, have done a couple but found this website with free designs and want to make a wee baby zoo book.
When I did counted cross stitch by hand, I think I did it on anything and everything. Used waste canvas and did sweatshirts all the time. With ME, just stabilize well if it's a knit. It is not a dense form of ME,so there should not be a problem.

I've stitched cross stitch designs on cheap sweatshirts (they are thinner) to cotton blends. I've had no problems. To be sure, test stitch first. Have fun with the designs.
It would probably look more authentic when embroidered on Aida Cloth. I just stitchen on a towel and it looked nice there too.
