This is now a very interesting question with good answers. I am leaving for the UK on the 4th of Dec and will definately shop around. Will be in Stirling for a week and in Wellesbourne, Warwickshire the rest of the time. See you there?
For Warwickshire, you can a free coffee at home.

I have purchased from ebay before and got some great deals..but then often got frustrated when
I needed to buy the same colours so now I stick to one supplier :-)

I buy mine from JOYS in Uk - I get 80 large reels loverly colours for approx £80 & never have any problem with any of their thread
I have bought from ebay but very dissapointed in quality
I buy Starlite threads from BSK on Ebay, £1.99 per reel for 1000 metres. I've never had any trouble with this thread, the black is the one that seems to break quite a bit, so I use Dark Grey instead, and no more trouble. The colours are brilliant, and look like new after several washes, and BSK is a fantastic firm to deal with.
I've bought some rayon threads from E-Bay very cheaply. I've been very pleased with them. They don't break any more often than the more expensive threads I've tried!
i just bought some rayon threads from ebay, been trying them this weekend, up to now all good, only one breakage using the black. and that was on very thick fluffy dressing gown, colours are lovely too, i was pleased, work just as good as the sulky i have been using, and very very cheap
