I embroidered an (expensive) silk tie for someone as a present for a friend of his - with sweaty hands and forehead!
I opened the back seam, hooped tear away stabiliser and embroidered the silk together with the (woolen?) lining. I used rayon and a 70 needle. Then sewed up the back seam again. The customer was delighted with the result.

I had embroidered ties in the past, but those were made from scratch, which was not half as scary as the silk one!

oh boy, I tried and made a mess of it. I like the idea of buying a cheap one just to practice. Good luck.

Yes and made a total mess of it and then gave up the idea of embroidering on a tie and gave another present. Good Luck

I've done several ties (bought at the local good will for .50 (giggle) but they turned out great, just hooped tearaway and centered the tie (almost hooped) made sure my design would fit and stitched away. I did hold my breath just to make sure - they came out fine. I think the idea of opening the tie is a pretty darn good idea tho.....

I think you would have to slit the stitching (seam) at the back of the tie and open it out before trying to embroider it. Then everything else depends on the material the tie is made from but I think I would definitely use Rayon thread and a fine needle 75/11, and I would lay the (opened out) tie on top of medium cutaway, then baste the tie onto that. Quite possibly you may need to float some light weight tearaway on top of the tie.

Thanks Meganne. This sounds like good advice. I will test on an old tie first. *4U Reva

I haven't but emblibrary has a video for embroidering on satin.
Because you can't hoop the tie given the size/shape I would use a sticky back stabilizer and pin it to the stabilizer making sure the design doesn't go near the pins
