After my latest visit to Norway where I saw lots of embroidery on the local costumes (worn on special occasions only) I digitised something similar.

But now that I'm test stitching I'm slowly going crazy - thread shredding, breakages, and so on.
I set the density of the design much lower than usual, I tried both a #100/14 jeans needle and a heavy metal needle which have large eyes to accommodate the thread. I sprayed the cones with a silicon spray I had from my knitting machine days.

What more can I do?? Your help would be really appreciated.

Maybe I should rephrase my question. Can any digitiser give me advice on how to set the density to wool (or other thick thread like Madeira's 12 wt Glamour thread). I'm test stitching squares set at densities varying from 6 through 10, and with greater stitch length, so I might find a combination that works for me.

Hi,
I use madeira wool and use the titanium needle
110 #18 - it works well, but I only embroider with the lowest speed as I do with metal thread and with some designs with Rayon (even if the thread is not the best one)
The needle is espacially for Lana wool.
It's expensive but more stable
Hope it may help you

Thank you. But I think the breakage and so on are due to the density of the design. I just wondered if anyone had digitised wool designs and at what settings.

Yes it's right there are special designs for wool. I choose designs with not too much stitches. I work with embird and delete for wool all stitches are smaller than 0.5 mm. If I know that the design is very thick I cut some underlayer. This is only possible for bigger designs with many colours. The design isn't so stiff and less stitches is against the breakage of the thread - only my experiance. It might depend on the machine and the presure also. I stitch almost with very low presure - between 0 and 1 only if I use Rayon or wool.
If you finished a project easily - let us know your experiances - we can always learn so much here at cuties - I love it to read what others do and already learned a lot. That saves time, money for material and frustration.
My method costs a lot of time. If I would digitize I think it would be more easy as you said.

Hello Martine, I never used wool to embroider but I Know that you need special designs for wool. I will add a link for you, maybe it is useful.

Thanks. I know you need special designs, that's why I lowered the density when I digitised. Point is I obviously have to lower it even further and was wondering if anyone had successfully digitised something.

I watched that video and remembered I had a case of Schmetz Glamour needles, made especially for thick thread - it came with a box of Madeira's glamour thread. So that will solve the embroidery problems, now I'll only have to get the the digitising right!

I have used some wool thread from Madeira, not the Burmilane. I like the way it stitches out - but I only used designs that were made for that sort of stitching and if my memory is correct - the design was rather loose - to accomodate that sort of stitching.

here are a few pictures of the designs that I stitched. Now just so you know - only the main part of the animal is stitched with the wool thread - so that you can fluff it out - afterwards.

Thank you, Shirlene. I may have to set the density even lower than I did - 'normal' setting is 4 - 4.5, I used 5.5.
I'll do what I usually do when trying something out: make small test squares with different settings - and save those for reference.
Your fluffy teddies and bunnies are lovely!!

I'm not sure what I like more - the designs or the sayings under them!!!
for sure both funny

The first picture is the design I made, the second a photo I took of the back of one of the costumes I saw (that was about 10 or 12" wide I guess).
I can easily change my design to be used with rayon or polyester, but I'd love to use the wool.

have you cleaned your up tenion disk because sometime when you use heavy thread they leave lint in the disk .
