You have your answer but thought you might like to know that Joann's has their Fat Quarters on sale for 99 cents this week . And our Michaels store has their fat quarters marked down to 49cents each . ( don't know if that is everywhere ) * Nancy

Because a quarter of a yard (9X44) is pretty much useless for some of projects, the fabric is doubled in height to 18" and halved in width to 22". But you can't buy it off the bolt that way. They are pre-cut.

Thanks Smith! I don't know why I didn't ask this question sooner. I was thinking it was just a 4x4 or something square...I missed a lot of fabrics by thinking that...LOL ;D *2U

Fat quarters are usually 18 x 22 inches. Its half of a quarter of a yard of material.
A quarter of a yard is usually 9x44 inches.
A fat eigth is 11x18
A fat half is 18x42
Hope this helps Suzanne
