I have been looking for new and creative designs to use in embroidery...I found a technique which may be new to embroidery but is not a new technique at all..I just purchased a reverse applique design from planet applique and after thinking about this type of design I realized I had done this before many years ago..this is a picture of a sweatshirt I made 20 years ago and yes I still have it more for a keepsake than anything..this was my first go at this technique..a piece of fabric was placed under the sweatshirt and a grid was sewn over that piece of fabric..little snips in x shapes were cut into each grid exposing the fabric beneath the sweatshirt. washing the shirt after sewing exposed more of the fabric..

I was cleaning out my storage locker yesterday and ran across the sweatshirt I did like that. It was autumn leaves. Also found the pattern for a heart & a couple others. Brings back memories

Boy does this bring back memories! I did one for myself 20 odd years ago. Mine was in a heart shape.

Oh My. I actually made t-shirts for me and my mother both, way back then... :)

This is a great technique and I remember it being around from back then and I am happy to see that the embroidery world is using it, too. Great job, still!
