No, the machine does it all, but it's a way to describe you what to expect. I use the same terms - placement line, attachment and satin stitch - in writing instructions for my applique designs.

No, the design will tell your machine what to do. Your Satin setting is for when you are doing manual/machine sewing, not embroidery.
