I have been fighting fleas all weekend. I have vacuumed what few rugs we have and sprayed them with some flea and tick stuff at night. We are removing the carpet in the 2 rooms that still has wall to wall carpet tonight (hardwood underneath). Which one of those carpeted rooms is my sewing room. I have to go through all my fabrics. Luckily I store my fabric in clear plastic bins, but they might be in there too. I have so much sewing to do and now I have to disassemble my sewing room. I might set up my machine in the kitchen because I have a few burp clothes ordered. Please pray for us. I am trying to keep my 15 month old and 4 year old contained, luckily the 7 year gets to escape to school.

thanks everyone. I did the light thing and caught sometoday while I was tearing out carpet with my husband. We removed it from 2 rooms, it was old and nasty anyway. I have been scrubbing the floors to get the slight stickiness from the padding. It's amazing how many fleas stayed in even after the carpet was gone. I have many bites. The exterminator was supposed to be here this afternoon, but he is delayed till tomrrow morning. we will have to be gone from our house for over 4 hours and he will spray the yard too. i am going to take my daughters and have a nice lunch before I have to vaccuum and clean the mess again.

My sympathy to you for losing your pet, It's so sad when this happens x
I have a friend who takes in foster cats as you can imagine some of the cats are in a poor state
The only thing that works for her is BORAX as another Cutie has mentioned - she sprinkles every week her carpets & furnishings, beds etc & has never had house fleas since she started to use BORAX (try & leave for as long as possible before you hoover & repeat)- she leaves hers for days after re-applying the 2nd time
after using expensive sprays etc she swears this is the best, safe & efficiant to use

Brilliant advice, nothing to do with sewing. This is why I love Cute

Oh my! We had that problem years ago after we came home from vacation. Apparently, the fleas prefer the dog or cat. But if the pet isn't around, people will do just fine. We used the flea bombs. 2X does the job. If you use them, be sure to cover those uncovered hardwood floors. Ours where damaged by the bombs. We layed newspaper under the can, but not in a large enough area. Good luck! I hope you are successfull!

I have had great success with flea bombs. But also use Raid Hornet Spray(other brands don't work well) on edges of the rooms.Bath dogs with original DAWN, add some chamomile tea to the bath water. Watch fleas fall off. Make sure EVERYONE shakes their pants edges very well. Remove shoes before coming inside. This will take a few treatments so be patient.Make sure you stay away from the house for a few hours after treating with the bombs and Hornet spray, air out the rooms well especially with the small children. Sorry about the loss of your dog. Spray your yard also BUT this must be done in the early morning.walk backwards as you spray starting from the far point back to your house. Do Not take your shoes inside if they come in contact with the yard spray.Pets and children should not walk on yard until it is DRY(about 2 hours) Good luck.

Raising 4 kids we always had dogs and cats and fleas. No bombs or powders would get rid of them for long until I came across an old remedy. BORAX
usually found in the laundry department of the supermarket and inexspensive. First vacuum thouroughly and after sprinkle Borax on carpets and leave it in the carpet. I used a big salt shaker to sprinkle. Apparently that kills the eggs. Combined with the light and soapdish you should be able to get an handle on it without using to much harmful and smelly stuff. Borax continues to work in vacuum cleaner bag next time you vaccum and repeat. Good luck and let us know what worked. PS I am extreamly alleergic to their bites and was so relieved to find a remedy

If you try the vacuum, vacuum idea, remember to put some moth balls in the vacuum bag, this kills the fleas inside the vacuumbag, and is inside the bag, so not dangerous for kiddies and animals
Good luck.

I grew up at the beach and we always had a sand flea problem. Moth balls work really well as does the water and dishsoap. Eucalyptus also works (leaves or oil).

I would go with the less toxic method especially with your children and vacuum ~ vacuum ~ vacuum. Wash what ever you can. They may still be in your yard so it may need to be treated (again caution with the children). Would recommend taking shoes off before entering the home. Good Luck.

I sympathize with you as a couplke years ago we had a bad infestation and two dogs we were trying to rid of them. We used "front line" but we also had to use a bomb type thing for the house and leave for several hours. We spent a few weeks picking them off the dogs also. They didn't like the front line and would be trying to get away. I hope we never have to do that again. Good luck and persistence will pay off.

you have to spray to kill the adults now and then in a couple of weeks to kill any newly hatched. I don't know where you live but in the US we used a flea paper that plugged into a low light socket that attracted them.

Frontline spray (big bottle) is about $50.00 now! Too expensive for too many treatments. The water and soap and light does work, just takes some time to get rid of all of them! There is a powered solution (Boric acid, I think) that can be put down, left for awile then vacuumed up. I think that works pretty good too. Good luck!

Some things I never heard of but will remember cause I have 2 cats, one goes outside and one doesn't. Not this Summer but the last 2 before the inside cat got fleas but the outside one didn't. I think she is immune to them.

Go to the vet and get some front line flea spray spray floors bed and chairs sofa and every thing it will not stain .this is how I got rid of fleas one time and I have never had any more it kills and the ones that hatch out can not reproduce and they will die also I have not had fleas in years and I have two dogs I give them flea pills and I do not see fleas Believe me front line will get rid of them may have to go over floors twice but you will get rid of them Abig bottle cost some where around 20 dollars

I was told by an exterminator that they lay eggs and those eggs hatch in 11-14 days and you must spray (treat) again. ALWAYS empty your vacuum bag or container after each vacuuming. (Don't leave it in the house)

Oh dear I'm so sorry for you!
I can't imagine all this work to remove them! It's horrible to imagine to remove so many things even if you have little kids.
I will pray for a quick solution that you can feel comforted in your home again.
I think the tip with the water is good, take dishwashing soap - it makes the top of the water too soft to let them escape, I use it always for the fruit flies, there I add a bit of redwine and vinegar.

God bless you and give you strenght to overcome this heavy burden.

I use a product called Raid Fumigator. It is a plastic container that you put a little water in, then you drop in a canister that emits white smoke. You have to leave the house for 2 hours min. But when the a/c or heat come back on....the smoke is gone. This kills bugs you did not even know you had. It does not leave a residue like the spray ones do. Good luck. Fleas are a problem, they will attack your children next.

I have been throwing away my vaccuum bags in the outside trash so they don't re infest inside. I am seriously considering the bombs. Will I have to wash surfaces and dishes and floors after the bomb. My husband is supposed to talk to a friend that is an exterminator. They probably do the bomb thing for you and charge a lot more.

This works the best. It is the only way how we get rid of fleas inside the house. Keep doing it until you see no more fleas in the dish. It may take 2-3 weeks.

camylow by camylow 16 Aug 2010

thanks for the ifo on that....

ladyboo by ladyboo 16 Aug 2010

I've been lucky so far. Not had that problem. But have heard of the water dish with soap. Friend said it worked for her, just takes time. We managed mobile home communities and had one home where the lady died and it was horrible. Couldn't even walk in the door, they were so bad. The son wanted me to sell the home. No way anybody was going to buy it that way. He eventually pulled it out. Fleas and all.

Fantastic way to get rid of fleas....thanks so very much.

eyeztodiefor10 by eyeztodiefor10 17 Aug 2010

I have heard of this and I'm going to try it! I have sprinkled the carpets with salt because I read somewhere it eats through their hard shell. I never thought of borax! I have some of that too! I've been bathing the dog about every other day and there is always a lot of fleas still on him. I vacuum every other day, one day upstairs the other down. I've even used a dustbuster to suck up all the cracks and crevices the eggs seem to find. I'm grateful for the plastic tubs with lids I keep most of my fabric in.
How do you keep the animals from drinking the water with the dish soap in it? Some rooms I can close off but not all.
Thanks so much for your suggestions ladies! I've been battling these little pests for weeks!

Do, try this also. Put a dog flea-collar in your vacume bag so that it can also kill off the fleas that you suck up. Or even spray the vac bag before you use it.
BTW.I keep all my fabric and Knitting yarn in plastic bags,I save all the plastic that our loo packs come in. They are a good size to fold like fabrics in them. I have stored them like this in perfect condition for yrs.
Hope the problem goes away soon.

Use the bombs they do work only draw back being you need to leave your home for a few hours perhaps longer for the children.

With fleas you may have to treat twice. After you kill the adult fleas there are still eggs that have'nt hatched. Good luck. You will get rid of them.

Yes, bombs work but with the little ones you do have to stay away for the day. Then vacuum after that to be sure they are removed.

One of my friends home was infested with fleas and she bought bombs and they worked. You must leave the house for the whole day. Good luck
