Yo have gptten good advice, so I will just say happy stitching.
Excellent question. This could have gone into the tips post too. Great advise from every one, but I think Beth, hit the nail on the head... ;)
I've heard several different guidelines for changing the needle: after 5,000 stitches (or 8,000 stitches), after each project, after 8 hours of stitching. However, I think the best approach is not to use a set number of stitches or minutes, but to go by what is happening with your machine and your embroidery. If you are seeing skipped stitches, if your thread is repeatedly breaking, if you are getting birds nests on the underside of your embroidery - any of these could indicate that the needle is worn and creating problems. Also, if you listen to the sound of the needle piercing the fabric while stitching, a worn needle will have a "thud-thud" or "thunk-thunk" sound - it will sound different from a new needle.
I've had regular embroidery needles last for 20,000 to 30,000 stitches, and I've also had them last for only 2,000 stitches (makes you wonder about the quality of the needle to start with!). You might also consider using titanium needles, they will last longer than regular needles.
At a minimum, I'll change my needle after stitching a large embroidery (like 15,000 or 20,000 stitches), just because I don't want to start a new embroidery and have it mess up because the needle is worn. Also, I will almost always make sure to replace the needle when I am beginning to work on something that is free-standing lace, just to reduce the chance that something may go wrong.
Beth, great advise. Love your sounds, but it is the truth...:) BTW Welcome to Cutie!
8 hours
I don't count the hours nor stitches. I just play it by the quality of my stitching.
Happy sewing, Starlet
Mommadooks, you always ask the best questions! I want to know the answers to them too. So Thanks!
I just wanted to know too. i read somewhere every blank stitches, sorry but I do not remember how many stitches, I will check to see.
I try to remember to change mine every 8 hours. If my thread starts breaking alot, I know I need to change it.I just finished up 4 towels, but each design took over 120 mins, so I will change the needle for my next project. You will get alot of good answers from all the other cuties and once you get to know your machine, you'll know when to change it. Carol
