I didn't know how to do them last Christmas so this is what I did.... :}
For non-FSL coasters.......
I hooped medium weight cutaway stabiliser in the 4x4 hoop.
Then I gently spray-glued the fabric I wanted to use (in this case it was sparkly Christmas fabric fat quarters), cut about 4 1/2" square on to the stabiliser.
The first basting stitch held the fabric firmly.
I stitched out the design and then took the hoop from the machine.
I cut some felt also about 4 1/2" square and glued it onto the underside of the hooped stabiliser to cover the stitching's backside.
Then I stiched out the final edging or border of the coaster.
I spent a few minutes trimming the cutaway from the coasters but in the end they looked pretty good.
I would have satin-stitched around the edges of the coasters on the ordinary machine if they had been just plain or straight but I chose to give them scalloped edges and I just couldn't be bothered doing all that inning and outing of the satin-stitch so all the coasters had little narrow white lines at the edges where the stabiliser showed.
BTW - when I do glue fabric or felt on to the hooped stabiliser I put the hoop onto my flat sewing table and cover the fabric with my 4 1/2" square quilting cutting ruler, which just fits inside the hoop, and I plonk a tin of boysenberries on top for a few moments until the glue has dried - no chance, then, of the fabric coming loose during the first stages of the stitching. I do the same when I glue felt to the back of the hoop.
For FSL coasters........
I just use WSS, two sheets, the second laid at right angles on top of the first and sometimes I even put small left-over pieces in between. I like my coasters to be firm but not like cardboard and not floppy either.

I also do mine like Shirlene. That's how I learned to do them, by a previous question she had answered some time ago. Oh, never be sorry for asking a question, this group is awesome when it comes to helping. Carol
I sandwitch cut away between material with a layer of thin wash away on top. This way it gives some stiffness to the coaster without making like cardboard. Plus the cut awyay inside absorbs the sweat from the glasses. Suzanne
