Templates! I print out templates for every design I do. Measure and mark center points. Make sure when you hoop you line your markings up with those on your hoop. Carol
If you digitized the design yourself or have software, you can add a couple of small alignment marks to sew first before the design so you know where it will be placed. I use a basting stitch to go around the inside of my hoop & have added some 'markers' to sew with that. I also use the 'edit' function on my Janome 300/350E to see where the design is placed in comparison to the hoop template grid.
Measure - Measure - and Measure some more. You pretty much have one try to getting it right. Unless you want to spend endless time ripping out. Use tape (masking tape - painters tape), pins, spray adhesive and what ever you have to keep it in place. Templates are most usefull to have. Outline the inside of your hoops and transfer the markings on to something clear. Cut out and use these for alignment.
I always use erasable fabric pens. I center my design and center the fabric on the hoop. I sometimes mark the whole area that is to be embroired. I always press the key to see what the area is that will be embroidered to see if it matches what I marked on the fabric.
I too use a removable marker to line up my designs... It really helps... fine the center and mark it an also mark the sides to the cross-hair lines on ur hoop, then tighten it down... It should be lined up then
I think it takes time to get set up and trial and error. Setting up can be time consuming to make sure it is correct. I chalk out and use removable markers. There will be others along
