thread on the spool when not using that spool so I don't have the ends hanging out all over the place. Thanks girls, you are the best!

I use the little ponytail bands for most of my thread spools. Isacord thread opens on the bottom which makes it nice. I save all my excess thread in a bag and use them to make tassels for all my fsl stuff (bookmarks, angels, etc.). I do like the cork idea too. I'm going to check at the $1 store and see what sizes I can find.

This won't help you keep the thread on the spools,

But what I do with all my little trims, is I save them in a little bag, and in the spring, I just grab a bunch of them, cut them into about 1-2 inch pieces and hang them in the trees so the little birds can use them to build their nests. They love it, and it's fun to watch out the window as they come back and forth to get more.

I like that idea too! We feed the birds in our front yard and sit on the patio and watch them, we have seen some new kinds lately! I also hand feed peanuts to the squirrels, I have one who comes up on the glider with me to get them and 4 others that will take the peanut from my hand. Love it!

I have no idea about the thread ends, but the thread on the spool I do. I got some tape and use a small piece on the end when I am finished with it, then when I use again, just take this tape off and stick to table, reuse again when spool is ready. The tape is the pink tape you get on a roll in the hair care section. It holds the thread ends down but doesnt leave resadue on the thread at all. Do you remember the spit curls by our ear that they use to do, or how they would hold bangs down. That tape. Hope this helps Iva

OMG, I do remember the pink hair tape I put on the sides and bangs! I have curly hair so I used it a lot, ROFLOL! Thanks for the tip!

mommadooks by mommadooks 16 Sep 2010

I even took a spool with the tape on it to the sewing store, they said that was fine and she was going to have to go get some. LOL

Thanks for asking this question. You got some interesting answers I may have to try. Seems I do have more scrap thread now that I'm changing that bad habit of pulling thread from the top.

Hugo's Amazing Tape is what I use. It sticks to itself and can be used over and over again. I buy the widerlike 2 inches and cut it in half the length to go around a full spool. As the spool gets smaller the tape just wraps around more times. I have it on all the spools that don't have the snap bottom.
Hope this helps.

I too used this and have it on alot of my threads - that I haven't used for a long while - it reallys stays stuck to itself.

leenova54 by leenova54 16 Sep 2010

OH, that is a snap BOTTOM????? I have been using it as the TOP, lol! My machine came with 3 sizes of spool tops so I have been using the small on on the spools with them backwards I guess! Learned another new thing! I have trouble getting that little plug off so it was frustrating me to grab my little scissors to stick in the hole and pull it up every time I changed thread!

keeponsewing by keeponsewing 16 Sep 2010

The bottom extends? I didn't realize that... hehehhe. With those spools I just wrap the thread around that little notch, but didn't realize it would extend out to make the wrapping easier. You learn something every time you come on here... Debra ROTFL.... Boy we make a pair. hehehe.

These pictures are not the best - I tried doing it as I was also taking the pictures - so they are a bit blurred - don't have another set of hands - sorry.

1. thread tangled
2. hold end of thread with one hand and around the thread spool and wrap thread 3 times around finger with the other hand.
3. pull end of the thread through the loop from the other side of spool.
4. tighten the knot and cut

That's good for thread you won't be using for a while. I can see how it works, I think, remember, I am a clutz big time, lol!

That one is cute, it is under the 4 by 4 too so that is good! Wish I could use 5 by 7, now that would be cool!

What to do with the excess strands that you cut off and MAYBE save for a reason?????http://www.thredworks.com/free2.p...;br />I also use a small hair tie or rubber band to keep the thread on the reel.

Darn, that star is too big for my machine and so are the pretty butterflies on the same site. So limited with the 4 by 4.

mops by mops 16 Sep 2010

There is a small version as well! Under the picture there is first the download for the large one and under that for the smaller one. They say that one is not tested.

ssampsel by ssampsel 16 Sep 2010

i've been looking for instructions like this!! Thanks

leenova54 by leenova54 16 Sep 2010

Heading back to check for a smaller one of the star! Thanks!

leenova54 by leenova54 16 Sep 2010

Still couldn't find the smaller link. The thing says below it that there is a smaller one but nothing to click on and when I download the pes it only brings in the larger one.

iris2006 by iris2006 16 Sep 2010

Go to the instructionspage and there you can download the smaller star.

Debra, there are a few designs made especially for the clipped threads - you use the thread clippings as part of the design - they are rather nice - I have seen several in the project section. I heard that you can make all sorts of lovely material with them - by incasing them between to sheets of WSS and stitching across them in a quilted manner - I don't save them - I just never got around to using any of these techniques.

As for the second - I learned a great way to tie the thread from a video - however - I didn't put it in my favorites or save it anywhere to share it with you. You twist the thread around the spool and then loop in around your finger about three times - then pull the end of the thread through the loop and clip off the remaining end - you have a tie - just like how some of the thread companies do it - when you get your thread. I wished I could show you.

Thanks, I would probably end up with it all knotted up, I am not very coordinated, I trip over my own feet, fall over for no reason even when I haven't been drinking, lol!

Debra, I used to keep cut thread and said to myself I would use it for a quilted jacket, tote, or something useful. That has never happened... I know you can use it to make paper, I've done that, but I don't stamp or do cards anymore. So I just toss it. Now about the other, I went and bought a bag of tiny ponytail holders and they fit perfectly around the spool and keep the strings from hanging and getting tangled. I think I paid maybe under a 1.00 for about 50 of those things.(wal-mart). :)I keep meaning to put that in the suggestion box at EmL but just keep forgetting.:) LOL

I really like this one! I may even have some of those around from before my hair fell out, sadly, it seems there may be another cancer problem, got the call today.

So sorry to read this. I also got a call from my Doctor last night, have to go and see him today, he is sending me to a plastic surgeon, who will operate. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Hugs Yvonne

Thank you, I had the lower part of my right lung removed in Oct with a carcinoid tumor in it. Then they said I had one growing in the top and wanted to do an invasive biopsy but I said we should do another scan and see if it was measured wrong. The scan came back saying it was smaller so we weren't suppose to do another scan till Dec but they called and said the blood work showed an elevated carcinoid level so I have to have a 3 day schedule of radioactive stuff in me and full body scans. I am so tired of going to the hospital for all this and I finally have a full head of hair again! I am not worried though, didn't worry through the last stuff and staying up beat, we are catching it early! I don't have the scans till the 27th of Sept.

keeponsewing by keeponsewing 16 Sep 2010

But I'm so glad that they are staying on top of all of this. You shouldn't lose you hair with radiation. My dad had that for 6 months. I would tell you he didn't lose his hair, but he was already bald. hehehe.... I will keep you in my prayers, my friend, God has a plan for all this. Satan tries to use this to keep us from giving God the glory, but He is still in control... Chin up. Hugs, Terre

leenova54 and castelyn I will be praying for you both....nothing is impossible with God.....Janet

leenova54 by leenova54 16 Sep 2010

Thank you. I am a very stubborn person, just ask any cutie who knew I resisted the temptation to toss my machine out the window when I was having so much trouble, lol! I know in my heart that I will be fine. When I had my first diagnosis I tole everyone that I am not going to worry, just putting it in God's hands and what happens happens. No tears, no fear, just do what I have to do and move on.

Some positive strokes...11 mos. after my DH retired a tomor was found in his right lung. The doctors acted very quick and his right lung was totally removed. This was 17 yrs.ago! He is doing great and has adapted to having less breath. He can still do most things that he used to do, it just takes more time with little "breathers" in between. Do not despair! Prayers for you.
Hugs, Nadyne
