Thred has been free for a while now. There are a lot of lessons, a manual to print out, and lots of designs from a design exchange to try out.

Well most are only free for digitizing for a 30 day trial. But there are several. I have my daughters PEdesign, but don't like it. I also have the free trial of Pulse, but you can buy it. Here are some of the links.
