I just placed an order for Vilene. I haven't used it yet. I have always use Solvy. I also considered a couple of other water soluible stabilizers. What is your opinion on best uses of these?

I love Vilene. I mostly use it for FSL designs (free-standing lace) What I understand about the water-solubles is this -- if you're using it as your "base", then the 'cloth' type (like Vilene) is best. The 'film' type (like Solvy) is mostly just for use as a 'topper' (such as when doing towels, to keep the stitches from sinking into the pile)

Probably better opinions out there, but that's what I've always heard. I've used Vilene since I started embroidering, only recently used Solvy for the first time - and personally, I didn't really care for it, but that's just me.

BTW, if you have never tried any free-standing lace yet, give it a shot once you get your Vilene! FSL is wonderful & there are SO many beautiful designs out there.

have you tried badgemaster? I am learning to digitize fsl and need a little more understanding of the stabilizers out there. I have done bookmarks and simple fsl but never with out a fabric base. I love the angels, and snowflakes, I am really eager to make my own.

oops forgot to say thanks! You wouldn't believe how much I have learned and how I have refined my techniques but by asking for help and getting clarification on things I am fuzzy on.

One thing you need to know about stitching out FSL is that it takes a LOT more thread than a regular design. It needs to be able to create it's own "base fabric" before you can do the design itself. =]

I have used both Vilene and wss film, like Solvy. I can get the last in several thicknesses, 20, 35 and 80 micron. The latter is OK for FSL, but for some reason I put more trust in Vilene because it looks more solid.
