When you can no longer get ANY parts for the machine! But then I'd still look for longer!!

This is sometimes a hard decision because I have one that was quoted as very expensive for a new circuit board, and another that needs a new motor.
But my clever Son found a small part amongst the electronic spares that he has, fixed the circuit board. And the other was a small adjustment to the band.
So it pays to get a second opinion, and to take your machine to a repair shop that only does repairs and not to a dealer who has new machines that they want to sell you.

This is a very good question. I think when the bill is high enough that it is better to just buy a new machine than I would give up. The cost is an individual decision. I have also had a repair man tell me that this was the last time the machine can be repaired. I am sure others will have something to say.

This question came to mind when my BFF needed to get something for her machine that was once her grandmother. The machine is sentimental ;D *2U

"When it costs more to repair than to fix!" OR when you want to use it as an excuse to get a new one!
