My granddaughter can't wait until she gets in our house so she can go to the tote with all the different spools...I have collected for years...
Regular spools in white, gold, short, tall, bulky, slim, then toss in some embroidery spools and away she goes making 'towers, castles' and all kinds of stuff....this is how she learned to stack things on top of each other....she is almost 4 and has stacked spools as high as 23 high....almost as tall as she is....also great for developing small finger and hand muscles in children.....you can tell I am a retired elementary and high school teacher....
My friend made a small child's chair out of the old wooden spools.....I have several of those on a wire and use them outside at Christmas to string on our outdoor tree....Pretty...My hubby used 3 wooden spools as the 4 legs for a piece of plywood to make a shelf to raise it high enough to put some of his paper work under....still in use.....for many years.
Also use on a storage wall, to hook things on...so they can be found...just start thinking and I am sure these cutes will find many ways to use spools.

Tie Christmas fabric around the spools and string them together for garland on a sewing themed Christmas tree.

Thank you all for the great ideas. I'm sure a can find some kids or church that might like them. I just don't feel right in tossing them in the garbage .

Doll Home Decor. Make floor lamps out of some of them using toothpaste caps & straws for shades and the flat top ones doll chairs etc. for a friends daughters Barbie doll. Also if you glue them to a homemade stamps you have a handle.

You might consider donating to a local childcare center if they could use them. They might find it useful for crafts.

I never through empty spools of any type away! I'm such a pack rat. But I teach Sunday School, and use them for a variety of things.
But you could wind ribbon or tapes on them.

I've only emptied two so I can't tell you much, but I thought about saving them and giving them to childrens Sunday School to use for crafts.

I keep them in a plastic bin for the kids. They
play with them and stack them like blocks. They
also string them on shoelaces along with large
wooden beads and make "necklaces". Kids love them.
