Heed Jrob's(Jerrilyn's) answer. She is an embroidery Guru if there ever was one. I have done these & do not hoop. You will have to use stabilizer in your hoope to pin it to if you do it this away & I usually use a med wt tear away so the pins don't pull out during the embroidery I also use a larger needle usually a jeans needle.

I'm so glad you asked this question. I haven't needed to stitch anything like this yet but I have wondered how to stitch on such fabrics.
The machines are wonderful and do so much more than we ever envisage.
With this information we could go ahead and stitch designs on children's raingear and backpacks.
So... a big thank you to you, Janet, and to all the people who responded. Another lot of plans are crowding into my head as I type..... :}

Janet, I wouldn't hoop it either. You probably would end up with hoop burns with a "rubber like" backing. I always just pin mine to the stabilizer where I want it. I just also use my 75/11 organ needle. I've never had any problems with those two combos. Oh, yes, I also HOLD the bag while it is being stitched if it is heavy. I've even done the type bags with a retractable handle and wheels the same as above. You can do it! ;)

Are you talking about luggage bags for travelling??? or the smaller children's backpacks on wheels with pull-out handles???
It's messages like yours that give inexperienced stitchers, like me, the inspiration to go ahead and actually try out ideas instead of just thinking about them.
Thank you for opening another door into this wonderful fun and exciting world of machine stitchery.

Janet, is it made from denier? If so you don't need to use a stabilizer. I don't on my market baskets. My first two I did, but because they are so thin I decided to go without since they are so sturdy. Worked like a charm. I didn't change the needle either, but I think it does depend on how thick the bag is.

I've seen those folding shopping baskets with stitched designs, and, of course, plans to do stitch one were hatched but your message has inspired me to actually buy one of the baskets and try a design on it. Thanks for the information.

I would probably look at a jeans needle. I would use a heavier tear away stabilizer - I have done several bags for a group of twirlers and did not have a problem with the stabilizer that I used. I would not want to hoop the duffle bag - stay stich it if you can. Good luck with your project.
